FAVORITES CONTINUE TO WIN PATRONS OF JAMESTOWN TRACK TREATED TO EXCEEDINGLY FORMFUL RACING, Four of Yesterdays Purses Taken ly First Choices Charity to Benefit from Closing Day Biff Crowd Out for Ladies Day. Norfolk, Va., April 24. This was ladies day at the Jamestown Jockey Clubs course. It was the last of these occasions for the meeting, and was largely taken advantage of. Conditions for outdoor sport were favorable. It was the first day during the meeting that the weather was at all springlike, and the bright sunshine worked wonders with the going. Followers of public form fared well. The first four winners were heavily supported, at prices that were liberal, considering that they appeared to stand out. August Belmont furnished the winner in the two-year-old race in his Rock Sand colt. Overman, which beat a fair lot. The apprentice Madeira had the mount, and while he did not show any great ability in the saddle, his mount won. When the break came Overman left the barrier with good speed. The colt broke so fast that Madeira evidently became confused or else the colt jumped from under him, as he Immediately pulled up, with the intention no doubt of getting back in the saddle. In the final drive Kittery, strongly handled by Goldstein, gradually gained on the leader and in a few more strides would have headed the Belmont racer. With riders reversed Overman would have won off by himself. The biggest disappointment of the afternoon was furnished by the consistent Rye Straw, held at 2 to 5 in the third race. Rye Straw was uufortuuato at the start. He was cut off when the break camu and McCahey was forced to work his way- through in the middle of the track, where the going was none too good. He closed a big gap but weakened in the final drive and was beaten a head, by Cooney K which made a runaway affair of the race. Several horsemen left for Pimlico this afternoon, including James Fitzsimmons, C. C. Smithson, David Duniop, Edward W. HelTiier, Frank Hcrold and J. J; Aloran. John Duffy wilt leave with T. R. Condraiitf Preakness eligible, The Nigger, tomorrow1. The colt was worked three-quarters in 1:20 before the races today. The horses were not called to the post for the. opening race this afternoon until 3 oclock. One of the trolley cars running to the course became .derailed and blocked the road, ajtd on this account the starting was deferred for half an hour. The management announced that the custom inaugurated by Bob Levy last fall of making the closing day "charity day" would be adhered to this spring. Recent work-onts at Jamestown. Track heavy.
