NEAR-BY CLOSING OF PORT ERIE STAKES. Owners and trainers who intend to race their horses over .the Canadian circuit are reminded that the valuable stakes offered by the Niagara Racing Association for its two summer meetings close for entries at midnight of Monday, May 1 and that is a date now not far away. These stakes provide for all classes of horses aud call for liberal nominations. Four are for the first meeting of seven days, which begins Saturday, July 1 and four are for the second meeting, which opens July 29 and ends August 5. The star event of the first meeting is the 3,500 Canadian Derby, always a popular and attractive race. The other stake races for the meeting are the Fourth of July Handicap for three-year-olds and over, the Niagara Stakes for two-year-olds and the Fort Hie Stakes, selling, for three-year-olds and over. All of these are of the guaranteed value of ,500. The. Dominion Handicap for three-year-olds and over at a mile and a quarter will be the chief feature of the second meeting. Last year when Jack Atkin won it iu a sensational race, it was of the value of 0,000. This year it has been reduced to ,000, hut even so, there are not now in sight many events of greater value and it should attract the best handicap horses of this country aud Canada. The other closed events of the meeting are the Iroquois Hotel Handicap for two-year-olds, Canadian Sportsman Handicap for three-year-olds and over, ,500 each and the ,200 Grand Canadian .Steeplechase.
