,1. ILL FORTUNE OF A STABLE WHICH HOUSED A KENTUCKY I DERBY WINNER I i Early in the present year it wasthe general opinion in turf circles that the stable owned by Mr. John Sanford was destined to rank high up in the racing of the year. This impression was confirmed when George Smith swept home in front of Stir Hawk iu the Kentucky Derby. But it turned out that that was the only touch of real good fortune falling to the portion of the Amsterdam turfman. George Smith went amiss after being beaten in the Latonia Derby and had to be retired. A band of costly two-year-olds, home bred and foreign bred, proved unable to do anything effective in racing and St. Isidore was a disappointment. So it came about that Mr. Sanford sold a number of his horses at auction and retired from racing until next year. His stable record was as follows: Horse. Col. and Sex. A. Pedigree. 1st. 2d. 3d. Won.
