LAUREL MEETING CLOSES OUTSIDER RUNES DEFEATS SPUR IN THE NATIONAL HANDICAP IN FAST TIME. Glory Bello Takes Her Race by a Nose Battle Abbey Wins in Another Close Finish Tremendous Crowd at Finish of Meeting. Baltimore. Mil., October 31. The National Handicap, tins richest stake of the Laurel meeting, was featured by the Maryland State Fair this afternoon. It brought a small but select field to the post and furnished a stirring contest, in which Runes beat Spur by a short head after a long and hard stretch drive. Behind these two were I.orro-.v, Flittergohl and Short Grass. Runes set a terrific pace from the start, the fractional time of the race being 23. 4 7 if.. 1:12. 1:37. 1:50. In the opening race lour of the nine starters passed the winning mark in a bunch, with Glory Belle just managing to get up in the closing stride to beat the pacemaker, Lord Byron, by a nose. Battle Abbey came from last place in the second race to beat Brooklyn by a short head. The latter tired after disposing of Manokin in the homestretch. A scant half length seperated Preston Lynn and Between l"s in the third race. Between Us. making a resolute effort when entering the homestretch, tired after getting to the leaders and was unable to improve his iwsition in the last eighth. The closing day brought out a tremendous gathering. The meeting marked a record both as to attendance and the amount of money handled and it is probable additional booths will be installed in the mutuel ring to accomodate the wants of the clubs patrons. Linda Payne fell when entering the homestretch in the fifth race and Tom Hancock tumbled over her. Linda Payne came out of the accident with a broken leg and was destroyed. Short Grass pulled up lame after his race. Edward McBride has arranged with "William Livingston to train his horses. Livingston was formerly connected with the stable of .T. A. Burtt-scliell. There are nine yearlings, the two-year-old Reprobate and the horse Tom Hancock in the McBride string at present. The imported French colt by Phoenix Muzette lias been named for Joseph A. Murphy. He is a grand looking youngster and has been much admired by horsemen stabling at Pinilico. The Maryland State Fair lias purchased seventy additional acres adjoining the Laurel race track. There was a rumor that, a new mile chute would be constructed, but this is unfounded according to Manager Matt Winn. Fred Williams, appearing to be in the perfect condition that lie always is, was among the visitors :tt Laurel this afternoon. He will ride in only two more races this year. His next mount "will be in the Manly Memorial ,000 steeplechase at Pimlico and he will wind up the raving season by riding in a stake to be run at Warrentown this fall. His mount at Pimlico will be on Sun King, which, by the way, was recently purchased by W. 1. Spurgeon from A. I. Parr. At the conclusion of the Laurel meeting the division of the Harry Payne Whitney stable, trained by Albert Simons, will be shipped to the Brookdale Farm in New Jersey, to be retired for the season. Among them are Itegina and Borrow. The Schuyler L. Parsons and H. K. Knapp horses will go from here to Belmont Park, where they will go into winter quarters. The horses of Andrew Miller and Frederick Johnson will also be retired for the year. Henry McPaniol will remain at Laurel for the next six or eight weeks. Seventeen of the Willis Kilmer yearlings, including the filly and colt by Magic just arrived from England, will be shipped to Ijsiurel to be broken and given their final trials. It is possible that McDaniel may remain at Laurel for the entire winter. Smith and Farrar will winter their stable at one of the Maryland tracks. There are a couple of green jumpers in the string that will be schooled this fall. Preston Burch has arranged to ship about forty of the John Sanford horses from Amsterdam, X. Y., to the Oaklawn track at Hot Springs, where they will be wintered. The following work-outs took place this morning over a fast track at Pimlico: Al Hudson Five-eighths in 1:03.
