PROMISING ENGLISH SIRE DIES UNTIMELY. The sire Seedcake, by Martagon Sesame, succumbed last week to a ruptured intestine, caused by a stone. Great things were expected of him when trained by Alec Taylor, but although he won several long-distance events, notably at Doncastcr, his unreliable temperament always prevented him appearing at his best in public. lie passed into the hands of Mr. Campbell Russell for 300 pounds, after winning at Sandown Park, and that clever trainer of jumpers put him to hurdle racing. Although his temper never improved, lie managed to win three or four races with him, and on one occasion, at Derby, landed a big starting-price coup in a three-mile hurdle race, starting at 100 to 8. He went to the stud in 1913, and his stock have given every satisfaction; as, indeed, tliey should, for he was a beautiful horse, whilst his breeding speaks for itself. He was a brother to Buckwheat and Magic. Mr. Russell has "about twenty horses foals, yearlings, and two-year-olds from his own mares by him, but owing to his military duties has trained none of them. Seedcake was eleven years old. London Sportsman, October 11.
