GROWING LIVELY AT CHURCHILL DOWNS. Derby Candidates Working Well and Now Ripe for Their Real Trials. By C. A. Bergin. Louisville. Ky.. May 7. — The locally trained Kentucky Derby candidates entered today upon their last week of training for the rich race to be decided next Saturday and. with the full realization that there are bat a few days remaining, trainers are sp ling along their charges in an effort to have them fully prepared to do their best on the afternoon of the race. Over a drying-out track at Churchill Downs yesterday morning several of the more prominent candidates were worked out at a mile and an eighth or over Md all finished without showing distress. The best showing was made by Gay Fortune, belong ing to Middleton and Jones of Louisville, which worked the full Derby distance of a mile anil a quarter ill 2:12%. Trainer Dan I.ehan was immensely pleased with the little chestnuts showing, and afterwards declared that he would be a sure start er in the Derby. D. Connelly, the stables rider, will lave the mount. Emil Herz Irish candidate Manister Toi. a rceont arrival at the Downs from Lexington, also essayed to traverse the Derby route, which he covered in 2:lt.. galloping the first mile in 1:40. Frank Keogli. who will be aboard the son of Sautoi in the Derby, was in the saddle yesterday and had the colt under restraint all the way. Harry Kelley and Cudgel Return From Lexington. Harry Kelly and Fudged, together with five other younger horses, belonging to J. W. Schorr, arrived yesterday morning from Lexington, and are stabled at the Churchill Downs track, instead of being retaraed to their former marten at Douglas Park. Both Derby colts arrived in splendid condition and .just to show that Cudgel was feeling at his best, trainer George Land sent the son of Broomstick — ■agenda Bareb a mill- and an eighth late in tin. afternoon. The colt, with Frank Murphy up. covered the distance in 1:50, which was a creditable move in view of the rather slow track. Both owner Schorr and trainer Land wore keenly disappointed because they could not start Harry Kelly in the Camden Handicap at Lexington Saturday. Had the track been in better condition, the son of Fltiinus would surely have started, they declare. It is becoming BMTC apparent every clay that trainer Walter Jennings is figuring on starting at least three ami possible four of the A. K. Ma comber ligihli s in tin- Derby. This conclusion is arrived at from the fact that he is pointing five out id tin1 s.vn nominees for the race, and each one of tills; quintet is being drilled over the full Derby rente. Barb one has been showing up well in his work, and has eon.e out of each successive work-out in a manner that is pleasing to Jennings. The most recent work of North Star III. and War Star, which always work together, was a mile and a quarter in 2:10. over a le-avy track. These English colts in their work, give the impression that tin y can run will in the mud. Hollister. Star Master and Star Gazer are apparently also good mud runners, as indicated ley their gallops over a heavy track. Their Litest work at the distance- was eminently satisfactory and supplies abundant evidence that they arc- noi far from leeing ready. J. S. Wards Berlin Showing Speed. uf at Douglas Park J. S. Wards Merlin is burning up the track, and his speedy work is not esenping the notice of the railbirds, who will keep him in mini on May 12. Over a fast track this son of Jim GalTin-y recently displayed a mile and an eighth in 1:52, without hoisting and distress signals. Trainer Ward declares the colt will surol.v start in the Derby, although he- has not .vet been able- to secure a suitable- rider, since Gross, who was originally engaged, was denied a license by tin-State Racing Coininis.~ion. Mr. Ward i negotiating for the- services of W. Crump, and will probably get the boy. in the e-vent that J. W. Schorr does not have- more than one ri-prosontativi- in Dicing race. Corrigan and Mi-Kinneys roan ge-liling Ac-abado is also showing up we-11 in his work-outs. His most recent work over a heavy track was a mile anil a qaarter in 2:17 .-,. oi. Matt J. Winn motored to Leslngtsa yester day for the purpose of transae-ting some important business there. lie will return here- today. Traine-r Charles Casey came ove-r from Lexington toda.i and announced that G. H. Brownes Derby eligible King He-rod woulel arrive it the Do.vns from Pimlico some time- today. Stalls have been reserved for trainer James Bewe, who is line- to arrive Tuesday with a numbe-r of H. P. Whitne-ys horses, among tie- numbe-r be ing s--veral Derby candidates.
