JOCKEY REDFERN MAY RECOVER. New York. May 7. — Surgeons at the Coney Island Hospital say that Arthur Kedfern, one of the famous jockeys who has raced on New York tracks, and who was seriously injured in BB automobile accident Friday evening, has a chance for recovery. When brought to the hospital with his skull fractured, specialists said he was probably fatally injured, but a delicate operation performed late Friday afternoon has improved his condition to such an extent that his physician is optimistic over his chance to get well. Redfern. who lives at 1752 Seventy-second street. Brooklyn, was driving his car down Twenty -second street when he struck a closed street barrier at Sixty-second street. Mrs. Redfern was thrown clear of the machine when it overturned, but her husband was caught beneath it. Redfern was pronou iced fifteen years ago one of the best jockeys the American turf ever knew. Philip J. Dwyer called him the best. He rode for the late William 0. Whitney, the late James R. Keene and for E. R. Thomas. In 1904. when he was at the zenith of his success, he received 9,000 for first and second calls for his services, in addition to his riding foes. Redfern won many races for the Sanfords at Saratoga on Mohawk II. and Caughnawaga. He rode Hermis when, in a runaway race, the son of Her-nience won the 1904 Suburban at Sbeepshead Bay. That year Mr. Thomas had first call on his services and Mr. Keene second call. At one time he was ■aid to be worth $ !50,000.
