LEXINGTON PICKING TOUGH Favorites Appear Well Selected, but Prove Delusive. Queen Errant a Victim to Believe Me Boys Gentry Rides Four Winners. Lexington, Ky., Septemebr 13. One of the most difficult racing cards of the Kentucky season, was the offering this afternoon at the Kentucky Association race track, hut it was no drawback to a generous attendance and a crowd rivaling that of the opening day was on hand to view the snort. The card on the whole was devoid of merit and was designed with a view to giving the poorer grade of horses an opportunity for purse money. The feature, if such it could be called, was the three-quarters sprint, that brought out a fair band of fillies and furnished an upset by the victory of K. It. Bradleys Relieve Me I.oys from Queen Krrant and Lady Always, the latter pair being vastly more in demand in a speculative way. Believe Me Boys raced this afternoon, minus her specially designed blinker, that protected her sightless eye. Since her last start, siie indicated a fractious post disposition and had the others continuously scampering to avoid her flying heels. AVhon the start was finally affected, Believe Me Boy.s was fully in motion and had :i considerable advantage. An outstanding incident of the afternoons racing was the marked success scored by jockey Gentry, who piloted four of the winners. He inaugurated his -victories by scoring luckily with Hasty Cora from El Ialomar in the initial race, and. followed with wins on Believe Me Boys, Fascinating and Gipsy Queen. The only one that approached a favorite was Gipsy Queen, all his other mounts paying long prices and their success spelling disaster for most of the speculatively inclined. About the worst upset that the backers ex perienced, came witli the downfall of Stephen II. in the fourth race, which ruled at odds-on. Fasci nating took his measure in easy fashion, but Stephen R. should improve on this showing, for he indicated by his running that he might have been a trifle short. An aggregation of about as poor a band of maiden two-year-old fillies that have started on any track litis year, furnished the contest in the second race and the winner, Clara Martin, managed to win in the slow time of l:02-and. Claims were made by O. A. Bianchi and Farris and Frnzier for some horse in the fourth race, but the claims were returned unopened by Secretary Shelley on account of the claiming time having expired. Erin and Allen Cain finishing one-two in the closing number, marked the first time in many months that the field players divided the entire place pool as well as receiving the straight pool. It, 1. Williams announced that Korbly, which had been an intended starter in the Breeders Futurity, will lie an absentee from that race. Oapt. T. J. Cla3 absented himself from the judges stand during the running of the second, race, in which ids Hull Gull started and John T. Ireland served as the presiding official in his stead. LADY ALWAYS MEETS WITH MISHAP. Lady Always suffered a peculiar mishap while at the barrier, due to Believe Me Boys fractious action and kicking propensities. The Bradley filly, while in close proximity to Lady Always, let go with both heels and caught the latter a glancing blow on the mouth, but with enough force to knock two teeth out and cause her to bleed profusely. The injury to Lady Always was held partially the cause of her failure to win. , 1app and Escoba had failed up to a late hour to get to the track. Trainer Ilirsch, believing that the crack G. AV Loft colt had reached here, telegraphed for information of his condition on arrival. It will be wired him as soon as the colt reaches these parts. C. C. Van Meter this morning disposed of on private terms the three-year-old Jack La flu to II. Stille. The rule of the Kentucky Racing Commission adopted yesterday, stopping betting as soon as all the horses reached the starting barrier, was put into effect today and operated disadvantageous! for some during the earlier races and considerable sums of money were shut out. The bettors, however, accustomed themselves to the new conditions and tendered their wagers with more dispatcli on the closing races and indications are that the new rule will work satisfactorily. The program book of the Douglas Park meeting will be ready for distribution to owners next Saturday, according to word from Secretary J. B. Campbell this morning. The following work-outs took place this morning over the Kentucky Association tracks: Track fast: Alfadir Three-quarters in 1:17. Aristobnlus Three-eighths in 30. Black Frost Mile iu 1:42. Blackie Daw Mile in 1:13. Broom Sweep Three-quarters in 1:175. Buffington Mile in 1:45. Courier Three-quarters iu 1:10. Dr. Tuck Three-quarters in 1:17. J. Rufus Seven-eighths in 1:29.
