PLEASING LATONIA RACING i i Closely Contested Finishes Entertain Interested Assemblage. -1 i Stockwell Gains Friends for the Latonia Championship Stakes Jack Hare Jr. Again. r . . - n LATONIA. Ky., October 1. J. S. Hawkins three-year-old Stockwell qualified handsomely this afternoon for his start in the Latonia Championship Stakes by taking the mile and a sixteenth handicap in game style after having been subjected to a hard drive from the start, due to the terrific pace he was forced to maintain to keep even with Sludge F. The pair practically measured strides until in tlie last sixteenth, where Stockwell gradually forged to the front, but his margin at the end was only a half length, Madge F. beating Pastoureau by the same distance for second place. Stockwell, however, was going well at the end, anil had the distance been longer he would have won out in tlie clear. Todays racing was spirited and formful, all the winners coining from the ranks of favorites or second choices. There was considerable surprise that the attendance was not diminished, in view of the strong counter-attraction of the opening game in the worlds series. According to turnstile count the attendance exceeded that of last Monday. The volume of speculation was on a par witli the big crowd. Close racing was the order throughout the afternoon and in some instances the winners were in doubt until the official placing. The opener found Blue Paradise and W. W. Hastings being driven to the limit, Blue Paradise winning by a head. Honor Man, which cost his present owner 00. .acdJias .unlergntt-vRiiVinaroporation to that on Jack Hare Jr. for throat trouble, graduated from the maiden ranks by taking the ,300 purse contested by maidens. His victory was the easiest Of the afternoon. Lorraine had difficulty taking the third race, but succeeded in the last stride in overhauling Valley Park Maid. Jack Hare Jr. triumphed in the fourth race and incidentally ran to his best form by winning easily from Fifi II. and Top Coat. Miss Parnell, Peccant and Tom Logan staged a hard duel in the fifth race and landed in the order named, with the poorly ridden Catania in fourth place. The final race found E. R. Bradleys Bulldoze just managing to last it out to beat Kingfisher. The Latonia management is still waging war on handbook operators at the track and debarred a dozen during the day for alleged violations of this sort. George Odom, whose King Plaudit achieved a sparkling victory yesterday in New York, telegraphed general manager Winn that he would ship King Plaudit and a companion here on October 7. The four horses that trainer .7. Hogan will bring here for P. A. Clark,, which include the starters in the Latonia Championship Stakes that will carry Clarks colors, are due to reach here tomorrow. Jockey "Buddy" Ensor will accompany the stable and will probably ride here for the remainder of the Latonia meeting.
