HARD LUCK OF OLD SY0SSET II. Given Away to End His Days Comfortably, tho Gelding- Is Racing Again. NEW YORK. N. Y., October 1. Three years ago Syosset II. was the pride of the Greentree Stable. He started at Aqueduct last week in a selling steeplechase handicap at about two miles, and on the strength of his past reputation was assigned top weight, 160 .pounds, conceding Robert Oliver thirteen pounds. Because he looked well, coupled with the fact that numerous persons remembered the old Syosset II. , which had once gloriously carried the Greentree Stables colors, lie was liberally backed. He ran well for about a mile and five-eighths, was briefly in front, but could not stand the strain and had to retire and finish a distant follower. Returning to the stand he was "dickey," but not visibly lame. Before the race Mrs. Payne Whitney said of the horse: "He may win this race, but he will not run many. I thought he had broken down "and gave him to a man to be used as a hunter. I suppose he did so well that the man decided to take a chance and race him." Vincent Powers, who used to ride the old horse and was fond of him, said with earnestness: "It was a shame, if not a crime, to start that horse. Mrs. Whitney gave the horse away, expecting that lie Would have a good home and not be trained. Instead of treating him as was expected. Frayling put him in training and brought him up here from Piping Rock. It was a shame." The horse was entered in the name of Miss A. M. Frayling, whose father, J. IC. Frayling, was officially programmed as the trainer. Previous to last Mondays race Syosset IL, which is now eight years old, last raced June 3. 1910, at Piping Rock under Vincent Powers and 150 pounds, winning his race in a canter. He won three of four races and ,750 that year, did not race in 1915. and in 1914 won two of six races and ,170. In his career the old horse was only unplaced three times, and certainly deserves a better fate. -Syosset II., Whitney bred, by Hamburg Hurley Burley. a mare by Riley Helter Skelter that Ed Corrigan used to race, and a brother to Burgomaster, Mineola and Floral Park.
