ENGLISH STRIKE SUSPENDS RACING LONDON, England, October 1. Racing in both England and Ireland has. been suspended on account of the big strike. The Newmarket First October meeting of four days was to have begun Tuesday, but has been abandoned and is not likely to be run off at all. This prevents some historic races, including the Great Foil Stakes, Boscawen Stakes, Jockey Club Stakes, Rous Memorial Stakes and Newmarket St. Leger. Other English meetings at Nottingham and Leicester are not likely to be held. The London courses, Alexander Park Saturday and Kempton Park October 10 and 11, are likely to be held. The Scotch meeting at Edinburgh next Saturday will run as usual, but the Irish meetings at Limerick and Down Royal will not be given. The Jockey Club stewards agreed with the governments suggestion that racing be suspended on account of the scarcity of trains and the necessary conservation of gasoline.
