: ! : JEGS CAPITAL HANDICAP Defeats Wellfinder, Lunetta and Polly Ann After Great Contest at Havre de Grace. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., September 27. The Capital Handicap Avas offered as the outstanding i attraction at Havre de Grace this afternoon and developed into a stirring contest in which J. E. Griffiths Jeg, ridden by Coltiletti, was returned the Aviuner, with Wellfinder and Lunetta second and third respectively. Irish Kiss was the one most favored by tlie public in the speculation, and he performed in a disappointing manner. There was quite a delay at the barrier before the field Avas dispatched in perfect alignment. Lunetta caused tlie trouble and several times lunged through the barrier. Wellfinder Avas tlie one to show the way for the greater part of the race, closely pursued by Lunetta and the ultimate Aviuner, with tlie remainder of the field, save Dresden and Clean Gone, in a close formation. When the turn for home was reached Coltiletti sent the Griffith starter through an opening next to the inner rail and under vigorous riding Jeg raced Wellfinder into defeat and A-as gradually drawing aAvay at the finish. Wellfinder hung on gamely and saved second place by a head from the fast coming Lunetta, the latter in turn being but a scant nose margin over Polly Ann. Threatening Aveather conditions prevailed this morning and a brief shower swept the course, but luckily did nothing more than settle the dust. The attendance Avas of good proportions for an off day. Fannie Bean won the initial dash of the afternoon. She had a four-length lead on Dovesroost at tlie end. The latter set the early pace, but proved no match for the daughter of Zeus when she challenged in tlie stretch. The favorite, Fair Virginia, raced forwardly throughout without ever seriously threatening the Aviuner, however. The second race Avas a most open one, E. F. Whitneys Clansman being most favored, although there Avas plenty of support for all the others with the exception of Miles S. The winner turned up in All Fair, a daughter of Allumeiir Sabretash II. She beat Carriitticita by two lengths. Carmencita showed dazzling speed for half a mile, then tired, and barely saved second place from the fast closing Gondolier. POPULAR TIPPITY WITCHET WINS. Much interest was displayed in the decision of the third race, a dasli of three-quarters of a mile, which brought together a speedy band of sprinters. Thunderstorm and Dellahm remained aAA-ay, and seven of the original nine entries faced the barrier. The majority of the spectators pinned their hopes on little Tippity Witchet, and that ever popular racer reAA-nrded them by scoring in decisive fashion. Ararat, from the II. r. Whitney stable, set a great pace to the stretch, Avith Tippity Witchet always in closest pursuit. The fast pace told in the last eighth and Ararat, tiring, fell an easy prey to tlie superior speed of the Broomstick gelding, Tippity drawing away easily at the end. Hobey Baker Avas practically eliminated by a slow start. Eddie Rick-enbacher ran far below his true form. Cubanita proved her superiority in the sixth race, Avhich Avas at a mile and seventy yards, Avhen she led home Old Dad and Gath. The winner AA-as outrun in the first part, but gained ground rounding the far turn and cut down tlie advantage of Old Dad. It Avas a Avhipping duel from the eighth post practically to the end and brought the plaudits of the crowd. Gath made an unsuccessful attempt to keep the pace with the first two, but did not possess the necessary early speed. C. Kochler claimed Cubanita from J. W. Pangle for 2,900, while A. Grantz claimed Old Dad for ,905. W. Martin purchased from G. C. Milton at private terms the plater Bloomington, Avhich is intended for a winter campaign in Cuba. Trainer M. Hackette Avas fined 0 by the stewards for failure to report the horse Rinkavous to the paddock judge Avithin tlie allotted time, as demanded by the rules of racing. Wally Fessenden was an arrival today from New Yoik and will remain for a few days.
