Baby Grand, coupled with Motor Cop as the J. K. L. Boss entry, was f returned the winner of the main attraction at Laurel Park this afternoon in a driving finish from W. J. c Salmons Step Lightly, while Ararat was third, t The winner came from behind the pace set by his i stablemate. Motor Cop, and took the measure of - Step Lightly through the final eighth. Motor Cop, which was the main dependence of the Boss pair, i displayed brilliant speed in the first part of the J race, but tired badly through the final eighth and i failed to finish within the placed trio. Step Lightly : raced in closest pursuit of the son of Uncle aud, i after racing him into defeat momentarily, assumed i the lead in the stretch. Her advantage was of short duration, for Baby Grand came through on the inside with a rush and was drawing away at the end. I The Monday crowd at Laurel this afternoon was well in keeping with other days of the past week, j Climatic conditions were all that could be desired j and the going was at its best. The card, which i was made up of seven races, included a steeplechase. The poorer grade of platers were catered to in an j extensive manner. Racing, however, was of a wholesome order and the majority of the winners earned the decisions after standing stretch drives. The largest field of the afternoon faced the , starter in the opening dash of the afternoon, which was for two-year-olds under claiming conditions at five and a half furlongs. Miss Colin, racing under the colors of J. F. Schorr, was an easy winner from Calistoga, while third position went to Early Bird. The winner was the choice and her victory was a -most popular one. The start found Calistoga showing the way, while Miss Colin raced in closest pursuit. When well straightened out in the stretch the Rosseter starter tired badly and Miss Colin drew away into a safe lead. Early Bird, which had been a forward factor from the start, outlasted Little Ammie foe thjrd place. The dash was the mcdiumtoitwa changes via the claiming-joute, in which G. W. Forman secured -Calistoga for ,315 and J. A. Hendricks took Miss Colin for ,240. ANOTHER STEEPLECHASE TO SHOAL. The steeplechase marked the second Victory at the meeting for Shoal, when he was first home in a drive with Jim Coffroth and Kathryu Harlan. The winner was hard ridden through the final turn of the field and closed gamely to get up in the closing strides to win by a neck from the pacemaker, Jim Coffroth. The race was marked by several spills, in which, fortunately, no one was hurt. Sea Bryn lost his rider at the fourth jump and Baronet at the ninth. Vulspar broke down during the running and was pulled up in bad condition. Eugene AVayland, trainer for W. J. Salmon, was ejected from the grounds this afternoon and his badge was taken up by the officials. The ruling applied for all time to come. Drunkenness, disorderly conduct aud abusive language to officials of the course were responsible for the ruling, which was ordered by the track management. George Miller resumed his duties in the judges stand this afternoon after an absence of five days while he officiated at Hagerstowii. M. E. Thompson arrived from Montreal with Mess Kit, Zoie and another horse. He was unable to secure stable room and was forced to reship to Empire City. B. A. Smith of the Sunnyland Stable reported that he lias unsexed Wilfex and that Tom Cassidy and Merchant Marine had been fired. Dr. McCully came down from New York and attended to their cases. J. B. Skinkers Eddie Rickenbacher was fired this morning and will be on the shelf for some time. Charles Brockmiller had Charlotte C. fired, while Billy Connor was unsexed. Edward Trucinan this morning at private terms purchased Commander from John Schorr, acting for E. B. McLean.
