DOUBLE FOR C. A. STONEHAM Yellow Hand and Dry Moon Win for Him at Empire City. L Both Horses Score Impressive Victories in Principal Races of Fine Inaugural Program. n NEW YORK, N. Y., October 17. The popular colors of C. A. Stoncham furnished the highlights of racing picture at the opening of the Empire City fall meeting at 1 he Yonkers course today. They showed in front first when Dry Moon scored in the Lenox Stakes and then were carried to victory in the Scarsdale Handicap, which featured the card. The racing was of a quality not enjoyed for some weeks on a metropolitan course. The big fields were reduced in most of the races to reasonable size by withdrawals, but the quality of the offering was not injured in the process. Trainer Hildreth scratched Mad Hatter and Knobbie and added Thunderclap in the Scarsdale. The Foreign Stable added Audacious, which was coupled with Georgie as an entry. Georgie, running for the first time in the colors of his new owner, was a decided disappointment. Audacious also disappointed. Yellow Hand was restrained behind the early pace set by Bon Homme. lie moved up with great speed to displace the Xalapa Farm starter on the turn and held Thunderclap safe in the final drive. Sande brought Thunderclap up with a burst ot speed, in the stretch under-a- hard- drive, buVthe Vulcain gelding could not overcome Yellow Hands lead. Georgie jumped into the lead at the start, but he was outrun early and ran wide at the turn. He had no chance after that. Audacious ran poorly. Kummer did his best with the Star Shoot horse, but he could not bring him into contention. Boh Homme followed Thunderclap by six lengths in third place. C. A. Stonehams Dry Moon led all the way in the Lenox Stakes, but was- tiring in the stretch and just lasted to win from Donnacona, the favorite, by a short head. The other two starters were badly outrun. Lady Gertrude finished third six lengths behind Donnacona. The early pace in the race was ridiculously slow. The real race was run in the last quarter mile, in 25, where Donnacona outran the winner by a good margin, but Marinellis waiting tactics had given the Stoncham starter too much of an advantage and the Loft colt just failed to head him. BABIN-DARK HILL WINNING COMBINATION. Babins well judged ride brought Dark Hill to the finish in front in the Mohegan Purse. Tody was second and Sammy Kelly third. Babin kept the winner under restraint behind the early pace set by Tody until the stretch drive. He then moved up to pass the leader and won going away. Only a mild drive was necessary to beat Tody, 3S she was tiring badly from her early efforts. Sammy Kelly closed a big gap after a slow start, but could not overtake the leaders. The Lexington Stables Lucky Hour, backed into favoritism, won as a favorite should in the Kil-larney Purse, which closed the days program. He rushed up to the leaders in the stretch, raced Native Land into defeat and drew away easily in tho last sixteenth. Ultimo was third. J. L. Hollands Sweepy won from a large band of good two-year-olds in the first race. He followed Knot Grass closely through the early running and wore him down under a. hard drive through tlia stretch. He just lasted to beat Griselda, which came up with a rush on the outside in the final ; eighth and disposed of Knot Grass for second place. Avispa, the favorite, got away slowly and never worked into contention. ; Knight of the Heather surprised the talent by 1 winning the Bedford Claiming Handicap from Valor, the favorite, with The Boy in third place. Apple : Jack II. started away in the lead, but gave way to Knight of the Heather early in the stretch racing. Valor made up a lot of ground with a rush through ; the stretch, but could not overtake Knight of the Heather. Frank J. Bruen, general manager of the Cuba-. American Jockey and Auto Club, visited the Yonkers course today. He will remain for a few ! days to complete arrangements with horsemen who arc planning to send racers to Havana for this ! winter. He will then go to Kentucky, returning . here before the close of the Empire City meeting to attend to shipment of stables from the New , York tracks to Oriental Park. . Griselda was claimed out of the first race by J. Kennedy, acting for the Lincoln Stable, for t ,725. E. S. Mulford took Valor away from the Rancocas Stable by tho claiming route in the second race . for 5,233.
