. CUPID0N FOR THE MELBOURNE CUP Cupidon, the recent winner at Randwick, Sydney, of the Australian Jockey Club Derby of 0,000, the richest three-year-old race in the Commonwealth, is a New Zealand horse by Martian Bebe, trained by R. J. Mason, the leading trainer in New Zealand. This is not the first time the Australian Jockey Club Derby has been won by a New Zealand horse, Mason, Cupidons trainer, having effected many famous coups at Randwick in recent years, notably with Martian, sire of Cupidon, and Noctui-forra, both owned by the late G. C. Stead. Noctur-form was a wonderful performer in Australia and New Zealand, and was subsequently sold to race in England, but never became properly acclimatized and was finally put to hurdle racing. While thu3 engaged he broke his leg on ignominious end for a Derby winner with an unbeaten record in Australasia. Cupidon will probably go on to Melbourne to take part in the Victoriau Derby, run at Flemlngton on tun opening day of the Melbourne Cup meeting in November. It is probable that ho will be well in the limelight for the Cup itself, as this great race has been won many times by a Derby winner.
