THREE NATIONAL CHOICES Duettiste Forewarned and Gerald L Are Fancied by Experts Future Prices of Douglas Stnart Make the theUIdener UIdener Candidate 14 to 1 and Sergeant Sergeantilurpliy ilurpliy Is Held at the Same Figure Much interest is shown on both sides of the Atlantic in the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase and its prospects this year The manner in which Duettiste the Joseph E Widener candidate has been going along in his preparation arouses most of the American interest in tins years decision of the worlds most famous jumping race The English and Irish experts are not disposed to take any American horse seriously in this best of all steeplechases but Duettiste has commanded a respect that has made him one of the choices in the future book bookCaptain Captain Heath in a recent discussion of ic National possibilities said At the moment there appears to be a dis ¬ position among the heads of the racing world to champion the cause of horses like Duettiste Forewarned and Gerald L for the Grand National Steeplechase One can easily understand it These horses have recently shown exceptional form over a country and when it conies to the acid test recent form is everything everythingThe The smashing victory of Forewarned at Manchester the other day when he beat many good horses will no doubt influence the market in a marked manner The horse did all he had to do in the easiest possible way and he had behind him good steeple ¬ chasers like Punt Gun and Conjuror II which appeared to be unable to make any impression impressionCOU11SES COU11SES ARE DISSIMILAR DISSIMILARIt It is possible however to exaggerate the importance of Forewarneds easy win If Manchester were in any degree like Liver ¬ pool or if a threemile track were com ¬ parable with four and a half miles at Ain tree there would be every justification for the support of Forewarned But the two courses and the two distances arc dissimilar dissimilarIt It is well to remember however that Fore ¬ warned two years ago actually did com ¬ plete one round of Hie Grand National coursi before lie fell That fact shows that Fore ¬ warned is capable of jumping the Grand Na ¬ tional obstacles and as he appears to have improved in every way including fencing and stamina his chance for the great event must be seriously considered consideredThe The professionals of the turf appear to be going more for Duettiste The horse which won many races in America has never been over a country in any degree approaching that which he will see for the first time at Aintree In my opinion he was lucky to beat Turkey Buzzard at Kempton Park but even so he is a horse with a turn of speed and has not been known to fall in this country countryESCOTT ESCOTT KXOWS IIEQUIKE3IEXTS IIEQUIKE3IEXTSHe He is being prepared by Escott the trainer of Pocthlyn and Ltitteur III which is suffi ¬ cient proof that this trainer knows what is necessary to win a Grand National It is a fact that he considers Duettiste to have a firstclass chance and those who arc in the habit of taking two or three against the field will probably be wise to include this one on their list listIf If looks were to win the Grand National Gerald L might be awarded the palm This is a grandlooking type of chaser with enor ¬ mous power where it is most wanted and his fencing this season has been absolutely perfect He fell at Aintree two years ago but he is much more likely to get around now nowThe The horse is jumping witli every confi ¬ dence and confidence is an important factor when one goes to Liverpool He has also a good turn of speed that will serve him well should he be standing up at the finish On the whole I am favorably impressed by the chances of the three horses I have named and their efforts between now and the third week in March will be critically watched by thousands like myself myselfAXTIIOXY AXTIIOXY OT ENGAGED ENGAGEDI I understand that T IL Anthony who was provisionally engaged for Drifter has not yet decided between that horse and Forewarned The latter is a difficult horse to train but if lie is all right on the day Anthony will doubtless be on his back backAs As anticipated the racing at Warwick yesterday was rather tame Drifter turned out in the Chandler steeplechase but gave a poor exhibition finishing fourth of six to Vive and Winter Voyage Drifter seems to have deteriorated since last year but it would be unwise to forget that he has pre ¬ viously jumped the Aintree course when weighing up his Grand National chances Major chancesMajor Doyle who has shown fine form in the saddle this season won a couple of races and an announcement regarding this capable riders awaitedLate Liverpool mount will be early awaited Late quotations made by Douglas Stuart one of the most important
