Here and There on the Turf Kilmers Kentucky Derby Hopes HopesSunference Sunference Held to Have a Chance ChanceSomething Something About His Ances ¬ try Back in 1918 Willis Sharpc Kilmer at this time of the year had visions of winning the Kentucky Derby with Sun Briar son of Sun dridge and Sweet Brair that he had imported to this country The race fell to the Kilmer silks but they were not carried by Sun Briar It was during his preparation for the race that trainer McDaniel recommended the pur ¬ chase of Exterminator also an eligible after it became evident Sun Briar could not win as a substitute for the imported colt And it I was Exterminator that proved the winner of the big race This same Exterminator has since accomplished more than all the other Kilmer horses to make his colors famous on the American turf He is still the star of the racing establishment of the Binghamton turfman and there is every hope that in 1923 he will go on the winning way that has made him a turf idol practically since his Derby victory victoryThis This year Mr Kilmer has a hope of win ¬ ning his second Kentucky Derby That is he has more than one hope But he would like exceedingly to win the rich race with a son of Sun Briar This one is Sunfer ¬ ence a chestnut son of Sun Briar and Con ¬ ference a daughter of Rock Sand the noted stallion brought to this country by August I Belmont Then a powerful second string to I his bow is that queenly filly Sallys Alley the filly that topped all the other twoyear olds of last year in her earnings earningsIt It is natural that Mr Kilmer should prefer to win with Sunference Sun Briar is the premier stallion at Sun Briar Court and it Avill be a long time before any other horse can displace him in the estimation of his owner He has every blood and racing rea ¬ son for bring a stock horse of rare excellence but it must be admitted that he has not yet proved himself as was expected Mr Kilmer is by no means disappointed with his stal ¬ lion and there is no reason why he should be for Sun Briar is a young horse and he still has every chance to take his place among the hading American sires Possibly Sunference may be the one that will give the son of Sundridge his place in the first twenty at the end of 1923 He was only raced five times lust year but he had one good victory to his credit when he won the Hudson Stakes at Aqueduct In that race some of those that finished back of him were Cherry Pie Bud Lerner Zev Martingale and others that had shown good form Eugene Wayland has high hopes for this colt and Wayland dees not make many mistakes mistakesThe The present plan is to send Sunference to the post in both the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby which is run a week later At Sun Briar Court in Binghamton Wayland has every facility for making hia I I I horses ready In addition to a spacious cov ¬ ered track there is an outdoor training ground available when the weather permits that is the equal of any in the country It was at Sun Briar Court that Wayland made Ex ¬ terminator ready for the Harford Handicap victory over Billy Kelly and Dexterous on April 15 last year yearWith With all these home advantages Wayland has determined to have his string early on the scene of action and has planned to take the horses to Havre de Grace about ths middle of next month In the milder Maryland cli ¬ mate it is possible he will have a better op ¬ portunity to tighten up his horses but in any event they will be well advanced when he unloads them at the Maryland track and ready to step right along alongAlbert Albert Johnson is again the contract rider for the stable Exterminator as Louis Stuart aptly expressed it would make a reputation for any trainer or jockey but of all his vari ¬ ous riders Johnson seems to understand tha old gelding better than any It may be better expressed by saying that Exterminator and Johnson understand each other The sterling old son of McGee and Fair Empress has won for almost every jockey that has had the good fortune to ride him but with Johnson as the pilot the old fellow appears to race with less effort Returning to Sunference no more fashion ¬ ablybred colt ever won either the Preakness or the Kentucky Derby Sun Briar combines the best of foreign blood and is the sire of this colt Then Conference his dam is a daughter of Rock Sand so that as far as her male line is concerned it needs no extended commendation Her dam was Aucience a famous brood mare that among others pro ¬ duced Whisk Broom II from a mating with Broomstick BroomstickConference Conference was never raced Audience was by Sir Dixon Sallie McClelland and that com ¬ bines the very best blood in the American stud book Sir Dixon goes back through Billet to that famous Voltigeur which won the Epsom Derby and St Leger of 1850 His dam Jaconet was a sister to Iroquois being a daughter of Leamington and Maggi3 BB the matron that has done so much for American blood lines linesSallie Sallie McClelland the dam of Audience and the great granddam of Sunference was a daughter of Hindoo and Red and Blue Red and Blue was a daughter of Alarm by Eclipse Hindoo was a son of Virgil and Florence a daughter of Lexington LexingtonMr Mr Kilmer has done much for the Ameri ¬ can thoroughbred industry in the notable im ¬ portations he has made to this country but this particular colt is a combination of the best from both sides of the Atlantic Just how Sunferencs acquits himself this year whether or not he is winner of either the Prcakuess Stakes or the Kentucky Derby will be of high interest The blood is thsre and jit is a question of the nick Wayland and jMr Kilmer are of the opinion they have the individual and they may be right Sunfersnce was not raced enough last year to afford a definite line to his class but it would be well to give a colt bred as he is consideration in looking over the possibilities of staks candi ¬ dates of 1923
