NEW ORLEANS RACING Jefferson Park Furnishes Some HotlyContested Finishes High Cost Proves a Repeater So SoDoes Does the Lucky Sam Frank Cases of Bad Riding NEW ORLEANS La February 21 Closely contested racing was again witnessed by a big crowd at Jefferson Park today The racing was under most favorable conditions the weather warm in the extreme being tempered by an overcast sky and so minus a hot sun sunBetting Betting activities again approached the record in total Small fields in the better races also made for better racing by the evenly matched horses making the different contests Winners in their previous races figured largely in todays results three re ¬ peating peatingA A claiming sprint and a handicap at threequarters were the intended features today but the claiming race following at a mile and an eighth held out more general interest It resulted in a victory for Sam Frank which under a hard drive and some good riding succeeded in outstaying Broth ¬ erly Love The latter was best but Mein was caught napping at the start with the result that Brotherly Love was half turned when it came and before he was straight ¬ ened away he was many lengths behind the leaders He was ridden wide afterward but closed an immense gap in the last half mile and it took Sam Franks best to beat him to the finish by a scant half length Normal was crowding the pair and was only a nose back of Brotherly Love Sam Frank also scored a lucky win in his previous race when he beat the runaway Superbum SuperbumII II AD III AX FIGHTS GA3IELY GA3IELYHigh High Cost which in his last race showed a splendid performance in winning again was much in favor today and made good from the other fairly serviceable ones that started in the fourth race He beat Hadrian after a hard drive to dispose of the latter Hadrian when he gave way did so in hur ¬ ried fashion and just outstayed Ralco for second place placeOrcus Orcus which won easily yesterday at a good price repeated just as easily this after ¬ noon from better opponents The runner up in this instance was Canyon which had followed him closely from the start Biff Bang an outsider landed in third place Avispa and Sunny Girl were the favored ones but Avispa was not good today and Sunny Girl was not given an opportunity to race in her usual style on account of the inferior ride that McDermott gave her herThe The worst offender in riding way was Wallace on Stanley in the second race In an effort to force A N Akin wide he forced his own mount to lose an immense amount of ground and thus enabled St Germain coming through next to the inner rail to get up and win by a small margin Had Wallace paid strict attention to his own mount Stanley would have won with ease easeVEINS VEINS POOH KIDE KIDEMein Mein also gave a poor ride astride Corson the favorite in the closing race He repeated ¬ ly took him back and finally eliminated him from contention when he attempted to take him around the others The Wit showing sudden improvement won after a sharp drive from Moody and Hickory HickoryThe The twoyearolds in the opener furnished only an ordinary contest as a result of Mid ¬ night Follies runaway victory This Worth ingtonowned filly was much the best and taking the lead at once increased her ad ¬ vantage with every stride and won in a can ¬ ter Fehrah an outsider landed in second place with A J Buja third thirdJockey Jockey Smallwood will be missing from the saddle for the next ten days as a result of the rough riding he indulged in while going to the first turn in the closing race The stewards suspended him for this period periodJoseph Joseph A Murphy officiated in the stew ¬ ards stand today having returned from Chicago this morning morningLEffare LEffare has boon sold privately to M J Reid by Sam Louis He will be raced here before being shipped to Maryland
