Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of February 22 1903 Sunday no racing racingLink Link Jones the oncefamous colored jockey is dead at his home in Nashville Tenn He was fortytwo years old and rode many highclass racers in the early seventies seventiesJohn John Hyland trainsr for August Belmont has just returned to New York from Garnet S C where a part of the stable is spending the winter Hyland says the twoyearolds there will be sent to Benning He also says that Mizzen Masterman Lord of the Vale Fire Eater and other horses that did well last year have shown improvement and will be ready for an early campaign Turf followers are already turning their faces toward the California Derby which is set for Monday February 23 on which Wash ¬ ingtons birthday is to bs observed As yet there is no real market for speculation none of the layers making a future book on the race but a few scattered bets having been recorded at sporting resorts in California Jen ¬ nings stable has been backed at 2 to 1 but not to any amount worth mentioning Green B Morris stable has received a little support at 4 to 1 Johnny Schorrs pair is held at Milton Henry the American jockey has re ¬ turned from France He says that he has withdrawn his suit against the French Jockey Club by advice of his lawyer M Labori as that was about the only proper course to pursue Henry also says that his case will probably be decided early next month and that if he received a license from the French turf authorities he will ride in this country the coming season He says that both he and Johnny Reiff believe that they will be re ¬ stored to good standing Reiff arrived at New York Sunday from California and will sail for France in a few days to look after his case which conies before a special board of I inquiry appointed to consider it Seme time ago Henry received an offer to ride in this country for the Lotos Stable which is owned by J W Arkcll If he is reinstated his services will be in demand here to such an extent that he can command a large salary salarySam Sam Wagner the western race track owner and bookmaker now visiting in New Orleans has quite a formidable string of raca horses There are fourteen of them in all eleven of them being twoyearolds These youngstera were picked up in Kentucky and the East and judging by the fall trials Mr Wagner be ¬ lieves two or three of them may develop into stake class material He is wintering at the Fair Grounds at Franklin near Dayton Ohio where he has both comfortable stabling and a good track to exercise on I dont know whether I will race in the East or not this year said Mr Wagner recently It will de ¬ pend on how my young stock turns out in the spring training In any case I will hardly ship East before the Saratoga meeting Mr Wagner is one of the principal owners of the Worth Jockey Club Chicago and the Windsor Jockey Club at Detroit He says that ht expects to have a good meeting at Windsol the coming summer in spite of the fact of threatened opposition from Grosse Pointe for Mr Wagner thinks there is room enough for both tracks to have profitable meetings
