EDWARD GRAY VICTOR Gives His Chance for Louisiana Derby Honors a Lift But Chiva Gives Him a Hard Bat ¬ tle Tom Cassidy Rewards His Backers Handsomely NEW OPvLEANS La February 23 Lou ¬ isiana Derby candidates Avere given an op ¬ portunity to show their comparative speed this afternoon at a mile and a sixteenth and it resulted in a victory for Edward Gray with Chiva in second place and Prince of Urnbria third The winner ruled an over ¬ whelming favorite but won by a scant mar ¬ gin and under a hard drive In the early running he was in clcse attendance on Chiva and appeared capable of racing into a good lead at his jockeys call Chiva however hung on tenaciously and even after being displaced of the lead finished resolutely and forced Edward Gray to do his utmost to win by a half length Prince of Umbria was the only other contending factor in the race and raced in third place from practically the start In the stretch he threatened briefly but the first two held him safe for the en ¬ tire race Xone in the field not even the winner showed up as a serious menace to the prospective threeyearolds that will strive for the iO000 of the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby DerbyDelightful Delightful weather was again the rule here resulting in the full strength of the local rac ¬ ing devotees being on hand at the Jefferson Park track during the afternoon The racing was interesting and highly enjoyed by the throng Betting activities continued heavy with the layers having considerably the bet ¬ ter of the argument at the close of proceed ¬ ings Favorites fared in better style than on several previous days and no outstanding j outsiders furnished surprises surprisesST ST DOXA1U AT LONG ODDS ODDSThe The longestpriced winner came in the fifth j race when St Donard led the others home with the favorite Scourgeman in second i place and the injudiciously ridden Gondolier j in third place St Donard was benefited i by the good riding on the part of Thomas who suddenly showed a brace up in his work workSome Some fairly useful youngsters made the contest in the initial race with Sun Lassie absorbing the bulk of support but proving a bad failure The combination of interference and timidity on the part of Murphy proved j her undoing Idle Thoughts under a good ride from Smith and showing the most early speed raced into a long lead which she re ¬ tained throughout and beat Dtielma an out ¬ sider with Blue Monday in third pJace Ilue Monday was another sufferer from in ¬ terference and it militated against his chances chancesThe The layers were given their severest jolt of the meeting in the closing race when Tom Cassidy was made the medium of a coup and carried out his part of it in easy style never giving his supporters a moment of uneasiness for he took the lead at once and won all the way as his rider pleased and under hard restraint Pastoral followed him closest and Black Hackle managed to take third place from the fastcoming Jake Feld Feld31AYOUIIXKEX 31AYOUIIXKEX KAHKOWLY KAHKOWLYMavourncen Mavourncen an outstanding favorite made good in the second race but only after she had given her backers some uneasiness when Morris took her back in the first quarter to come around the leaders She only succeeded in overhauling Galeta in the last few strides stridesWireless Wireless was a disappointment in the third race He failed of getting a part of the purse Deep Sinker well backed landing the purse from Grayson with The Xephew in third place placeTulane Tulane was claimed from the fifth race by W D Bernhardt for 1700 1700H H D Curly Brown was among the days visitors coming here from his ranch in California He is en route to Havana for an extended visit Mr Brown stated that he had several yearlings and numerous foals on his place and that he is hopeful the youngsters will make racing history He stated that work on the Tanforan track is progressing and that it was almost certain there would be racing over it next Novem ¬ ber berPlans Plans for Mobile racing include six races daily No purse of less than 500 will be given in eleven duys of racing one of these days being for charity The meeting is in ¬ tended to begin March 20 Joseph A Mur ¬ phy will have charge of the racing and Ham ¬ ilton and Sriyder will alternate as starters At least three hundred horses are expected to take part in the racing from here hereJames James OHara who is extensively interested in the Jefferson track and in the Bowie and Thorncliffe courses was an arrival from Hot Springs to be here for the remainder of the meeting
