FEYLANCES IMPRESSIVE WIN Carries Silks of J K L Ross to Victory in Holiday Feature Xot a Druluel Place Ticket Sold on Scths Ak AkSarJcn SarJcn Finishing Second In First llacc Philanderer Ilepeats SAX DIEGO Cal February 23 There were just two horses around which opinion revolved in the Washington Purse race at threequarters the main race of the holiday card at the Tijuana course yesterday after ¬ noon These were Feylancc carrying the harmonious black and orange of Commander J K L Ross and Dolores from the stable of J M Crane Of course there were others in the field but aside from Brilliant Kay which was given mild support none wus seriously considered consideredIn In so far as Feylance was concerned the talent was strictly in line The handsome Ross colt had the inner rail position and he allowed Brilliant Ray to make the pace Jockey Claver kept him under restraint un ¬ til they turned for home Then it was a question of how easily Feylance would win Brilliant Ray which had cut out the path continued steadily on his way and was easily second best at the end taking second place by two and a half lengths from Do ¬ lores The latter was just a trifle slow to get into action but then he really had no good excuses Jockey Merimee roda him hard all the way Polly Wale Settle and My Rose which finished as named were never in the contention Despite the fact that Feylance was quoted at 1 to 2 in the books there were many who were willing to take this short price There was money for Dolores and in victory he would have paid 2SO to 1 but most of the tickets bearing his name or mutuel number were for second place and it was here that the talent was hard hit The race was run in the good time of 1 11 which is only two fifths of a second slower than the track mark made by Slippery IS 1m when carrying an even 100 pounds Feylance carried top weight of IK pounds but the manner of achieving victory proclaimed that he prob ¬ ably could have taken an impost of ten pounds more and won just as easily easilyVOLU3IE VOLU3IE Of SPECULATION HEAVY HEAVYThe The card as a whole was given over to the plater class of horses but despite the lack of quality in some fields the program drew a big crowd and the wagering was spirited the books and mutuel plant working at top speed at all times In this connection one of the strangest stories of the turf can be related and it tells of what is said to be the unparalleled case of not a single mutuel ticket being sold on a placed horse horseThis This freakish turn was in the opening race a dash of three and a half furlongs for I maiden twoyearolds J W Marchbank wellknown California breeder was repre senled with the entry of Snooksie Bradley and Ella Porter The former a likely look I ing filly by Rock View Russian Sable was i a forward contender from the start She forged to the front midway of the stretch i and under jockey Clavers careful guidance won by one and a half lengths from Seths Continued on twelfth nizc FEYLANCES IMPRESSIVE WIN Continued from first page I AkSarBen the latter from the B F Mc 1 Clain stable and ridden by jockey F Weiner wellknown New York reinsman When the mutuel prices were posted the crowded grandstand gave a deep sigh for it was announced in bold letters that not a single place ticket had been sold on Seths AkSar Ben This left the Marchbank entry to take the entire sum wagered for second place Had a solitary ticket been sold on Seths AkSarBen for the place it would have paid 407 As it was the Marchbank entry paid 400 to place on each 2 ticket In victory Seths AkSarBen would have paid the grand figure of 21980 to 1 1What What one might term a really clever and intelligent ride was given Philanderer in the last race at a mile and seventy yards Jockey Millerick had the mount Although Philanderer had scored a victory the day preceding the public was only lukewarm to his chances and Purl and Louis were made favorites over him Jockey Millerick was content to let some of his rival riders take their mounts to the front He kept Philan ¬ derer clear of all interference and when several of the starters were in close quarters at the threeeighths post Millerick was just far enough away so that the speed of his mount was not impeded The field turned for home with Delhimar Don Jose and Barris kane running only heads apart Quick to see the smallest sort of an opening jockey Millerick shot Philanderer through and he wore Delhimar down in the last few strides to win by half a length The latter was half a length better than Barriskane while Purl which was made favorite in the mutuels at 3 to 1 lost the consolation end of the pursa by only a head headHALTER HALTER 3IE ACTIYE ACTIYEOwners Owners who had desires to build up their strings were busy during the afternoon The first claim of the afternoon was in the fourth race which was won by Nizam Gold Bryan was the favorite and finished second He was claimed from the Sunflower Stable by 7 B McGinn who was represented by
