| . . ARD PATRICKS SUCCESS 4 English Derby Winner Which Recently - Died Was Smasher. ♦ His Ham, Morganette, Once Sold for ,590, » Produced Thorough bred « Which Brought More Than 00,000. * Bi E. E. COUSSELLO LONDON, England, April 12— Ard Patrick, . the Derby winner of 1902 was destroyed toward the end of March last at a Prussian n government stud. He was twenty-four years " old. Senile decay compelled his destruction. ■ The stud veterinary surgeons tried the ie "restoration of youth," a gland operation as s devised by Steinach. The horse suffered d badly and was unable to fulfill his duties. 3 The operation was quite unsuccessful. The most memorable of the races in which n Ard Patrick competed was the Eclipse ,e Stakes at Sandown Park in 1903, when he ie defeated Sceptre and Rock Sand. The last ;t named was favorite, but could only finish third, beaten three lengths. After a thrilling .. II contest, stubborly fought out, the colt defeated the filly by a neck. If Rock Sand had never met Ard Patrick jj and Sceptre he would have been regarded as a remarkably high-class colt. He won the Two Thousand Guineas, the Derby and the e St. Leger. His defeat in the Eclipse Stakes ,„ proved he was not a smasher. If further [r proof were needed this was forthcoming when Sceptre gave him thirteen pounds more J than weight-for-age and beat him in a canter r by four lengths at Newmarket. It was immediately after his victory in the ie Eclipse Stakes that the late Count Lehndorff, f the German imperial stud master, gave Mr. r[ Gubbins 105,000 for Ard Patrick, whose half If brother, Galtee More, had been sold for the ,e same amount to the Russian government a a few years earlier. ARH PATRICKS GERMAN RECORD. For many seasons Ard Patrick was the e leading stallion in Germany. Four years rs he was at the head of the list of winning stallions. His influence on breeding in Germany _ has been considerable. He got many Rood racehorses and his fillies almost without exception did well on the turf and are doing well at the stud. His best filly was Antworf, from Alveole, by Grafton — Ste. Al-vere, JJ by Hermit. This is the same immediate family as Lisma, the dam of Omar lr Khayyam. Antworfs daughter, Alpenrose. was the champion filly in Cermany last season. Ard Patricks best sons were Ariel, which also JJ descends from Alveole, and Dolomit. Ariel * in 1914 won the Germany Derby. It would I.e. however, merely a catalog to mention n the names of his numerous offspring which von good races. — . 15 1? .705 700 OQ - » . n " ■ ie as s d 3 n ,e he ie ;t .. Count Lehndorff quickly seized the chance and bought the son of Kendal, which also did remarkably well in Germany. The Russians sold Galtee More because they thought after they had him a few seasons that he was deteriorating, whereas he was in his prime. He proved it in his new country, where his offspring won over 300 races and stakes valued at more than 50,000. Morganette, the dam of Galtee More and Ard Patrick, is one of the few mares in the English Stud Book which has bred two winners of the Derby. In addition she was the dam of Blairfinde, which won the Irish Derby. MORGANETTES DERBY WMJWL Morganette was a bay filly foaled in 18M. She was sired by Springfield, from Lady Morgan, by Thormanby. Her breeder was J. H. Houldsworth. She ran once only when she was unplaced in the Prince of Wales Stakes of 3,000 at Goodwood. As a three-year-old her owner sold her to J. Gubbins of Knockany, County Limerick, for ,500. She proved almost a gold mine, for she returned to Mr. Gubbins more than 00,000. Galtee More won the Two Thou-n sand Guineas, the Derby, the St. Leger and vl35,095 in stakes before he was sold for 05,000. Ard Patrick won the Derby and 33,105. He also was sold for 05,000. The produce of Morganette actually won twenty-_ two and a half races and 77,050 in stakes. None of her daughters, either on the turf or at the stud, has achieved much fame. There is, however, so much merit in the family that the line is almost certain to become prominent again one of these days. Mr. Musker paid 5,000 for one of this family. Temple Hill. KENDAL SOLD FOB 5,000. Mr. Gubbins bought Kendal from John Porter, who had received the horse as a present from the Duke of Westminster. The price was 5,000. After a few years John Gubbins sold Kendal to Majcr Piatt for 0,000. The last-named breeder brought him to England and eventually disposed of the horse to an Argentine breeder for hB10,000. Kendal headed the English stallion list in 1898 and also was at the top of the sires list in the Argentine. St. Florian was by St. Simon — Palmflowcr, and therefore own brother to the dam of Symington. His best form was shown when he won the Duke of York Stakes as a three-year-old. St. Florian was only seven years old when he died, May 18, 1S98, within a few weeks of the service which resulted in the birth of Ard Patrick. It was considered that Morganette had been stinted early that year. One day in May she was discovered in sea-JJ son. St. Florian was then ill. The stud groom urged that another horse should be used. Mr. Gubbins refused to alter his plans and so Morganette returned to St. Florian. This true turf story reads like a romance. Morganette and St. Florian are buried at the Knockany Stud. Behind the stallion boxes where Bridge of Earn and Prospector are at present is a tablet on which appears an inscription stating it marks "the grave of Morganette dam of Blairfinde, Galtee ]-lMore and Ard Patrick; she with her padr dock companion, May Day dam of May Boy and grand-dam of Clorane immortalized this stud." a ■
