R. L GERRYS CYCLOPS « 1 Takes Measure of Speedy Miss Star in Spring Handicap. ♦ Cold, Disagreeable Weather Results in Small Crowd — Flying Cloud Easy Victor. NEW YORK. N. Y.. May 10.— Robert L. Gerrys Cyclops was winner of the best offering at Jamaica this afternoon when he accounted for the Spring Handicap, worth ,S50 to the winner. At the end he was ridden out to wear down the Riviera Stables Miss Star and the Greentree Stabler Ca-naque was just up to take third place from the Quincy Stables Caveat Emptor. It was another cold disagreeable day at the course and a high wind blew into the stand that made things anything but comfortable. As a natural result there was a thinning out of the crowd and it was the smallest attendance since the ouening of the spring season, though the regulars were there M usual. The track had improved considerably and was in good though not fast condition. Canaejue. by his unruly action?, caused some delay at the post in the Spring Handicap, but the field was sent off in good alignment except for the fact that John Sanfords Glentilt went in the air slightly and had scant chance. Sande lost no time in sending Miss Star to the front and she was showing the way until well in the homestretch, though in the early stages Canaque raced up to her and the pair of them went along well lapped. Cyclops had left from the inside post position and when he was in close quarters Rice took him back and eased him over to the outside, where he could find clear sailing. Canaquc and Cavea Emptor were well lapped back of Miss Star, hut could not cut down the lead cf he daughter of Hesperus. It was not until headed down the stretch that Cyclops began to gain on the filly and he steadily wore her down until he was alongside. Sande called on Miss Star, but she had nothing left and the colt went on to be a safe winner, though he was being ridden out by Rice. « IV NO OlTRIDES BARXES. Miss Star saved second place and Canaque, outtinished Caveat Emptor, largely because Lang outrode Barnes. Glentilt. as has been told, had scant chance at the start, and the only other starter was A. K. Macombers Spread Eagle. He was outrun all the way and cut no figure. Lady Choco was winner cf the five-eighths dash for selling plater juveniles that was third on the program. She was ridden by C. Rose, making it two scores in a row for that promising young apprentice. George Petersons Goldmark finished in second place and third was the portion of W. Robinsons Blackolia. The Savoy Handicap, over the mile and :.evcnty yards distance, was second in importance and it resulted in an easy victory for the Rancocas Stables Flying Cloud, with C. A. Stonehams Flannel Shirt second and K. M. Howards Nose Dive third. E. G. Soules Sleiveconard was the only other starter. I, it tie time was lost at the barrier and Flannel Shirt, from an inside position, was the one to go out in front, with Nose Dive and Flying Cloud both outrunning Sleiveconard. Down the backstretch Nose Dive had Flying Cloud pocketed back of Flannel Shirt and he was securely bottled up until nearing the far turn. There Sande moved away from Nose Dive and went after Flannel Shirt. Before the stretch was reached he had closed much of the ground, but the Stoneham colt was hanging on well and was still showing the way at the turn into the straight. Sande took his time and, riding confidently, gradually made up his ground, went on by. and at the end had Flying Cloud three lengths clear. Flannel Shirt beat Nose Dive ten lengths for second place and Sleiveconard was a length further away.
