UNEXPECTED HAPPENS Post Haste Surprises in Taking Main Race at Latonia. Favorite Belzoni Has Scant Chance Under Poor Ride Dr. Hickman Again in Limelight. - LATONIA, Ky., Oct 9. The mile and a sixteenth dash for a purse of ,800, which, featured todays racing, resulted in an outstanding upset by the victory of Gallaher Bros. Post Haste, which won in handy style after having led for the entire way. Triumph and Belzoni, the latter an overwhelming favorite, fought it out in strenuous fashion for second place and A. Wilsons superior skill over Wallace enabled the Bradley representative to get home an inch or so in advance. Belzoni was possibly much the best Wallace rode him incompetently all the way. The rider was unprepared at the start, causing Belzoni to get away stumbling. He im-r mediately began plying his whip and the colt, racing guideless, got himself wedged between Triumph, Wida and Prince K., with the result that he was unable to stride freely. He did move up at the lower turn, but hero Wallace began riding wide and the loss of ground he sustained proved too much of a handicap for the horse to overcome. Dr. Hickman, which has been .much in the limelight in a racing way since the opening of the fall Kentucky meetings, again gave a splendid exhibition by winning in easy style from some fast sprinters in tho fourth race, serving as the secondary feature of the afternoon. He moved into the lead promptly at the start and was never headed, winning well under restraint from Right on Time, with Translate following. Lady Champ in this race might have been formidable with, a snug ride. The mare seems to be in good form, but Hastings rode her into frequent jams,- with the result that she was unable to get fully going until well along in the stretch, where she came fast BIG CROWD PRESENT. Improved weather brought out the full racing strength here and the combination of a fast track made for excellent sport Most of the fields were of limit size, with ordinary ones engaging, but their even caliber brought about close finishes and spirited contention from the start The inaugural dash, at a mile and seventy yards, was taken handily by Tody, which. Pool sent into a long lead at the outset, and he kept her in advance for the entire way. Tex, under hard urging, landed in second place and Trust Official third. C. B. Heads Lady Marian, after many-trials, finally emerged from the maiden rank3 when she scampered home in front of eleven other maiden fillies in the second race. Annie Lyle gave her a hard battle in the last sixteenth and Nancy Langhorne also contended strenuously for the purse. Dorothy Buckner had most of the racing luck in the third race, resulting in her leading all the way to win from Haman, Locust Leaves finishing in third place. J. S. Ward took down his first purse of the meeting when Defiant, a stoutly-backed one, won after having to overcome early difficulties to secure clear going in tho stretch. Bourbon Boy, strongly contending from the outset finished in second place, with Levoy, the early leader, lasting for third money. PARKE AIDS PARIS MAID. Under Parkes good riding Paris Maid snowed a vastly improved performance, but she was lucky to beat Brotherly Love by a nose. The latter was far out of it in tno early stages, but came with a great rush during the stretch. Oo La La outstayed tho others for third place. r A. J. Riley has advised that he would ship four horses here from New York and that they would reach here some time thi3 week. There were departures this morning of minor stables to Huntington, W. Va., where a nineteen-day race meeting begins next Saturday. Jockey J. Pevic was taken suddenly ill after the fourth race and had to cancel his remaining riding engagements. Dorothy Buckner was claimed from tho third race by Muth-and Forsha at a cost of ,900. Jockey Lawrence Lyke underwent an operation this morning for the removal of his tonsils.
