Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of October 10, 1903 Racing at Morris Park, Worth, St. Louis and Detroit. The closing of the Highland Park track, Detroit, today will bring an influx of horses to Worth from the Canadian circuit. In spite of stormy weather the sale of August Belmonts horses in training and yearlings at Morris Park attracted a large crowd. Twenty-seven head were disposed of for 8,-525, the bidding in most cases being extremely lively. A. J. Joyner and Newton Bennington locked horns over Woodsaw, a superb yearling colt by Octagon Woodvine, and the figures kept soaring until Bennington stopped after Joyner had bid 2,100, top price of the sale. Thand feature race of the .afternoons sport at Worth was the Liberty Handicap, one mile and an eighth, for three-year-olds and over, with ,000 added. The adding of the Don and Major Tenny at the last moment sent a field of ten to the post. Hildreths entry, consisting of Witfull and Major Tenny, was regarded as the best and were made a 3 to 1 favorite, but the best either could do was for Major Tenny to finish third. The winner turned up in Lady Jocelyn. The Don showed the way until just before turning for home, where he tired fast and fell away beaten, giving way to Witfull, which in turn surrendered the lead to St. Tammany. The latter appeared the winner when well straightened out for the wire, but in the final sixteenth he was joined by Lady Jocelyn, which outstayed him in the last hundred yards after a sharp struggle. St. Tammany finished two lengths before Major Tenny for second place. The stake was worth ,795 to the winner. . Today was getaway day at Morris Park, and the racing will shift to Brighton Beach. The last four races on the program saw the star performers in action. Starting with the third race, the White Plains Handicap, Divination was the winner over Palmbearer and Race King. The conditions were two-year-olds, over the Eclipse course, with ,000 added, and the net value to Andrew Miller was ,295. The next race, an allowance affair, under the same conditions as the preceding race, fell to Tepee, which baat Piquet and Colleen Bawn rather easily. The Morris Park Autumn Stakes, with ,000 added, at two and one-quarter miles, weight for age, resulted in the defeat of the favorite, Major Daingerfield, when Shorthosc, which has failed lamentably in previous efforts to stay over a distance of ground, showed sudden and unexpected improved form and, trailing Major Daingerfield for two miles, he simply ran away from him when called on in the last quarter. Only two started. Eugenia Burch closed the meeting with a victory by finishing half a length before Stolen Moments, which beat Carbuncle eight lengths for second place.
