PAPYRUS IN SLOW TRIAL Only Permitted to Gallop Mile and a Quarter in 2:16 2-5 Appears Slow at Starting. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct 9. The long-puromised trial of Papyrus happened at Belmont Park this morning and there was nothing sensational shown when Basil Jarvis only permitted him to go along for a mile and a quarter in 2 :16. As American ideas of a trial go this means nothing, but English methods are so different that it may be it was enough to show that the son of Tracery is progressing favorably in his preparation. One thing that was shown fn the gallop was that Papyrus is a bit slow in getting under way, for he left the post practically walking and Bar Gold was given a good lead over him. Ho gathered speed as he went along and he could undoubtedly have run much faster, but he will have to be more alert at the barrier on October 20 than he was on this particular occasion if he is to catch Zev. The son of The Finn will leave the post like a quarter horse and it will be a big advantage even in a race of a mile and a half. Among those on hand to see Papyrus work was J. B. Joel, who offered 00,000 for the colt before the running of the St. Leger.
