FIRM FRIEND VICTOR Takes Gowanus Selling Stakes in Spirited Finish. Youngest of Fators Has Notable Day in Piloting Two Winners Osprey Once More. JAMAICA, N. Y., Oct 10. Sandy Mc Naughtons Firm Friend was the winner of tho feature offering at Jamaica today when he was first in the Gowanus Selling Stakes, which was worth ,525 to the winner. But Mrs. T. O. Webbers Wynnewood made it exceedingly interesting for the McNaughton plater and it was only in the closing strides that he was beaten, while Episode was a distant third, before Masquerado, the only other starter. It was an afternoon of good sport that was served up by the Metropolitan Jockey Club and, while the first game of the worlds series was a strong counter attraction, a big crowd was out The progress of the game was displayed at the tracks, so that the patrons knew all about that titanic struggle, so far as the score was concerned. Little L. M. Fator starred when he scored a double by bringing Mad Play home the winner of the third race and then followed it up with his victory on Firm Friend. The start was not a good one in the Gowanus Selling Stakes, for Episode broke the barrier, while Masquerado was hot ready and left so slowly as to have scant chance. The fact that Episode was away running fast availed him nothing, for Clarence Turner sprinted old Wynnewood away at a pace that took him into a clear lead, and Firm Friend also had no trouble about heading Episode. Through the backstretch Wynnewood continued to increase his lead over Firm Friend, and at the half-mile ground it did not seem possible that the son of Friar Rock would be able to catch him. Episode was holding his place back of Firm Friend and, in fact "was going so well that he seemed to have a good chance to race to second place. WY5T5TEWOOD GIVES WAY. It was not until well into the short stretch that Wynnewood showed signs of giving way, but as he did Fator called on Firm Friend, while Sande began his drive on Episode. Tho Fator call was effective and stride by stride Firm Friend drew up on Wynnewood, until at the end he had him beaten by three parts of a length, but Episode failed utterly under the whip and was a full three and a half lengths back of Wynnewood. It was a speedy field of two-year-olds that came together in the five and a half furlongs of the third race and Mad Play, a brother to Mad Hatter, was the winner from John E. Maddens Gypsy King, with H. P. Whitneys Dazzler just beating Nellie Grey for the short end of the purse. There was a bit of rough riding in the race, in which Gypsy King was the chief sufferer. But for that he probably would have been returned the winner. Nellie Grey and Blissful made the pace and Mad Play and Sun Maiden were not far away. Eaglet, the stablemate to Mad Play, was a bit slow at the start and Gypsy King, when he could not come clear early was badly bumped on the first turn and Kummer was forced to take him up sharply and go to the outside. M. Fator held an inside position with Mad Play throughout and at the head of the stretch, when Nellie Grey ran out slightly, had his opportunity and shot through into command. In the meantime Gypsy King had worked his way around on the outside and was closing up with a great rush at the end, but he could not overcome his early misfortune and was beaten a half length. Dazzler finished fast to beat Nellie Grey, and Eaglet had closed up some ground to finish fifth. REVERSAL OF FOR3T. The Poet, from the puincy Stable, showed a surprising reversal of form when he won the opening five and a half furlongs dash from All in All and Baby Lane, and back of them came By Play and Camphor. From a good start By Play was first to show in front, but Baby Lane and The Poet were not far away, with All in All racing third. By Play did not last long in the lead and then it was The Poet and Baby Lane closely lapped. Before the stretch was reached The Poet was eased back from the filly and at the same time All in All was moving up resolutely back of the pair and in a position next to the rail, where there seemed to be a good chance to come through. On the stretch turn Baoy Lane went out slightly, but-vsho was pulled back to the rail before Coltiletti had a chance to avail himself of the opening with All in AIL This forced him to go around on the outside. In the last eighth Continued on twelfth pace. FIRM FRIEND VICTOR Continued from first pace. The Poet outgamed Baby Lane and then All in All headed her with something to spare to take second place. A mile and a sixteenth for cheap ones was the second offering and H. Roseachers Bessie Leighton proved best when she led Sir Galahad II. home and Diversity was third. It was Bessie Leighton and Gex that cut out the early running, and finally she put the old gelding away before the stretch was reached. Sir Galahad II. was a different horse under the expert riding of Sande and was closer up than under the ride of Shillick on Tuesday. Sande worked his way along next to the rail and at the head of the stretch swung out slightly to have racing room. He then passed the others, but could not catch Bessie Leighton. Diversity finished resolutely to be third, while Gex was quitting badly. Antilles ran a disappointing race. The chicken-hearted Moonraker set the pace and stuck it out for the mile and seventy yards of the fifth race to win from William Daniels Knights Bridge, and Jacqueline Julian saved third money from Sylvan Spring, the only other starter. Coltiletti rushed Moonraker into command at the rise of the barrier and he was good enough to make every post a winning one and then successfully withstand the stretch challenge of Knights Bridge. Jacqueline Julian failed utterly when called on and her performance gave color to some nasty paddock gossip before the race that there had been discovered evidences of her having been tampered with. Then Osprey confirmed the form of his recent victory over the flying filly Avisack by defeating her in the last race of the day and did it with the weights not so much in his favor as in the previous occasion. It is not hard to forecast that Osprey may be one of the star sprinters of next year, if nothing better. J. A. Coburn has purchased Knobbie from the Rancocas Stable and he will be campaigned next winter. The Coburn stable, now numbering fourteen, will be shipped to Tanforan for the meeting there and at its conclusion will be sent to Tijuana. A. Collins will go along to do the stable riding. Raymond Belmont claimed Fusee from P. S. P. Randolph out of his race Tuesday. Hollie Hughes will ship the horses of the Sanford Stud Farms back to Amsterdam, N. Y-, Thursday. T. Burns canceled his riding engagements of the day on account of illness. Laverne Fator has recovered from his recent attack of boils and will resume riding Thursday. Frank I. Taylor was a visitor from Laurel and is distributing blanks for the Havana meeting and assisting James McLaughlin in interesting horsemen in that winter racing point George W. Shilling has been in New York for some time in the interest of the Tijuana meeting and he has promised to remain until after the International match.
