Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of October II, 1903 Sunday, no racing. Irish Lad has been retired for the season. It was reported that Heno had broken down. W. S. Fanshawes four-year-old was counted on as a probable starter in the Brighton Cup. It is said that he has gone so lame that he will race no more this season. Another American millionaire turfman may race in England next season, according to a story prevalent at Morris Park. E. R. Thomas, owner of Hermis and racing partner of Alexander Shields, intends to visit Great Britain the coming month and will probably look over the turf situation there. Although there was no authentic information on the point, it was common talk among the turfmen that Mr. Thomas, if the outlook should appear favorable, might take over a string of high-class racers next year with the idea of making a successful campaign where, other Americans have partially failed. If Mr. Thomas should decide upon such a course Shields would undoubtedly go along as trainer. Arthur Redfern, who receives a salary of 0,000 a year for riding W. C. Whitneys horses, is not in high favor with his employer and trainer John W. Rogers just now. Red-fern, since he had his collarbone broken at the spring meeting at Aqueduct, has not bean riding up to the sensational form of last season. Not long ago, when Tommy Burns, had been released by the Whitney stable, an arrangement was made by which Hicks, under contract to Perry Belmont, began to wear the1 "light blue, brown cap," and with a superb ride on Armenia in the Matron Stakes the colored jockey sprang into instant favor. Yesterday Redfern was kept on the ground, while Hicks rode Stalwart to victory in the Champagne Stakes. Then in the fourth event John Bullman, August Belmonts jockey, had the mount on Mr. Whitneys Valour, Redfern still remaining idle. Redfern is under contract to Mr. Whitney next year, but in all probability Hicks will have the call.
