EMPIRE CITYS BIG CROWD . Best Attendance of the Meeting Sees Some Interesting Racing. r Ilephaistos Takes the Yorktown Handicap Gallantly Rigel Wins from Some Speedy Sprinters. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 27. F. E. Browns Hephaistos won the Yorktown Handicap, at a mile and an eighth, from the Greentree Stables Cherry Pie and Nedna. at Empire City today. Only the three horses faced the starter. The warmer weather and the fact that it was the last Saturday of the New York racing season brought the largest crowd of the meeting to the Yonkers course. The racing was interesting and, although the feature was neglected by the horsemen, a number of good horses started in some of the other races. W, R. Coes Lady Belle won the Capitol Handicap, which attracted the best field of tne day. In the Yorktown Handicap the Greentree Stable pair, Cherry Pie and Nedna, and Hephaistos were the only starters. M. Fator took Hephaistos back while going to the first turn and allowed Cherry Pie to go into the lead. On the turn Nedna also moved up and passed Hephaistos. In the racing down the backstretch Cherry Pie and Nedna were racing closely lapped, while Hephaistos was being saved close up behind them. When turning out of the backstretch Fator called on the brown colt and he moved up readily to the leaders. Passing them before the stretch was reached he raced easily to the finish, while Fator sat still. He was a length and a half to the good at the end, while Cherry Pie beat his stable companion by a head for second place. The race was worth ,860 to the winner. The secondary feature was the Capitol Handicap, for all ages, at about three-quarters, which attracted seven good sprinters. Rigel, from the Rancocas Stable, was the winner, with H. P. Whitneys Fly by Day second and August Belmonts Osprey third. RIGEL UNDER RESTRAINT. Corcoran sent Fly by Day to the front soon after the start, but she was never able to draw away. Dominique and Osprey were closest in pursuit Meanwhile Rigel was being saved in fourth position. When the stretch rush started Fly by Day was still leading, but she was tiring and also lost some ground by coming wide. Dominique was closing up and Osprey was holding his own, while Rigel, though coming fast, did not appear particularly dangerous. Then suddenly the white and green of tho Rancocas jockey was seen rushing through and in the last few strides Rigel went to the front to beat the Whitney filly by a neck, while Osprey just failed by a nose to beat her for second place. Dominique tired and was beaten by two lengths and a half for third money. W. R. Coes Lady Belle won the second race at about three-quarters, which attracted a good field of two-year-olds. The Rancocas Stables Mad Play was second, and the winners stablemate, Elvina, saved third place easily from James Butlers Variation. Continued on sixteenth page. EMPIRE CITYS BIG CROWD Continued from first page. Lady Belle began forwardly, but Merimce tcok her back at once and saved her in third place next to the rail, while Variation was setting the pace. Mad Play was racing in closest pursuit of the leaders and Elvina was following her stable companion. When entering the stretch Mad Play took the lead, but Merimee brought Lady Belle up with a well timed rush and passed the Ran-cocas colt on the final turn to win going away by two lengths. Mad Play saved second place by a head from Elvina, which finished with a great burst of speed. The others were well beaten. J. C. McKays Melachrino raced to his real form today and won the first race at a mile and seventy yards easily from J. H. Sheas Lucky Antoine, with J. F. Richardsons Top Sergeant third. Top Sergeant was possibly best, but Ramkin swerved in front of him at the start and he was away several lengths behind the others. Anderson unavailingly attempted to rush him through the field when going to the first turn while Rubien was setting the pace, but he was still among the followers through the backstretch. Meanwhile Melachrino was racing under restraint in closest pursuit of Rubien. When M. Fator made his move with Melachrino on the turn into the stretch he closed up ground swiftly and raced into the lead. From there to the finish he was under restraint, maintaining his advantage easily to win by two lengths. Lucky Antoine closed a big gap to be second by a head and Top Sergeant, showing more speed in the stretch than any other horse in the field, ran past the others to take third money by a length from the tiring Rubien. His rush came too late, however, to give him any winning chance. E. M. Krulewitchs Owasco surprised by beating a big band of cheap platers in a mile and a quarter of the fifth race. G. H. Dempseys Sir Galahad II. was second and W. Kennellys Kings Belle third. Dicks Daughter set the early pace, but she was througn halfway down the backstretch and Scare Crow took the lead momentarily. Then Sir Galahad II. raced to the front on the far turn. Owasco meanwhile was working his way up through the field and on the stretch turn raced to the front He quickly; drew away to win in a canter by eight lengths, while Sir Galahad II. just lasted to take second place by a head from Kings Belle.
