Visitors to the Derby this year will see a beautiful and modern race course at Churchill Downs. Improvements made for the comfort and convenience of the patrons include additional seating capacity of 4,000 and a new paddock just to the rear of the clubhouse. The stands at the Downs will comfortably seat 15,000 persons when the spring meeting opens. - This year will mark the fiftieth running of the Derby and the only landmarks that remain of the original surroundings which greeted the lovers of the thoroughbred, back fifty years ago, are a few stately elms and oaks around the entrance, where stood the original frame grandstand, which was across the track from the present stands, that stretch for nearly a quarter of a mile along the western side of the famous course. That Alex Gordon, who is training car- j toonist "Bud" Fishers big string at Douglas Park, has intentions on the Derby with Mr. Mutt is the talk of the watchers around that park. "While Gordon is going along I slowly witli the crack Ballot colt, he is not . letting him fill up. j Peter Coyne has two Derby eligibles under I his charge which will have to be reckoned with when the time comes for racing, if King Gorin IL and Bourbon Boy continue to train like they started out. Both these colts wintered well and are ready for the j long gallops, over the. main course.
