PILGRIMAGE TO LOUISVILLE Chicago Sportsman Already Planning to See Golden Derby at Churchill Downs. While nominations for Kentuckys Golden Jubilee Derby at historic Churchill Downs will not be announced for a few days, Chi-, cagos thousands of turf lovers are making elaborate plans for their annual pilgrimage to the scene of Americas greatest three-v ear-old race. Chicagoans have been present at every running of the Derby, but since 1900, when Charles Head Smith, well-known local sportsman and favorite with the Board of Trade "Pitters," won it with his Lieut Gibson, Chicago has, year in .and year out, paid homage in ever-increasing numbers to the race, the peak coming a year ago when approximately 10,000 from Chicago were part of the vast crowd that witnessed the mighty Zev win the Derby. During the early years of the celebrated Kentucky three-year-old fixture Chicago had its own famous American Derby. But since 1S04, when High Ball, with Fuller in the saddle, carried away the honors at the old renowned Washington Park, this famous lace has been lost to Chicago, and Chicago, for many years the center of the American turf map, turned its interest and its sentiment to Kentucky and her Derby. There is every promise now that even more Chicagoans will see the Golden Jubilee Derby than were in the record-breaking throng of a year ago. In fact, it has come to a point where it is a question of how many people the railroads can handle between Chicago and Louisville. As was the case last year the Chicago Business Mens Racing Association will assume personal supervision of a great many of the Chicago parties making the trip. They have been promised a block of seats by general manager Matt Winn and already Chicagoans have been warned by Charles T. F.ssig of the Business Mens Association, to make their reservations early if they want to be assured of special train accommodations and want to get in on the seats that have been set aside for local delegations. -A ..
