Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 7, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Hot Springs. No horse at Sheepshead Bay looks better t 1 than Golden Maxim, says an eastern turf c critic. He went amiss last year or would now I be the property of E. It. Thomas. He seems to be as well as ever. Announcement was made today that the , 1 horses of the late William C. Whitney will run in the name and colors next season of Herman B. Duryca, who was the partner last year of Harry Payne Whitney- in the West-bury j Stable. Jockey Arthur Rcdfern, who was ruled off the turf at Ascot Park last Friday for refusing to obey the judges orders to ride Laureatea, was reinstated. The order, however, holds i good against Redferns father, who was ruled i off at the same time. The acceptances for the Kentucky Derby and Oaks, made March 1, cleared the decks of dead timber and it is now possible to approximate the fields that will go to the post for the big races of the Louisville meeting. Payment was made for twenty-five horses in the Kentucky Derby and fifteen in the Oaks. Perhaps secretary Price could have picked out a few other candidates that he would have been pleased to have left in the Derby, but on the whole the outlook is very favorable for a good field and a contest fully up to the reputation of the longest-established western race claiming the name of Derby. On last : years form English Lad will be held the bsst t of the lot, but two-year-old form is not always a reliable index to three-year-old form and it may be safely assumed that the owners of the other twenty-four colts and fillies had what they deemed substantial reasons for pay- ing acceptance fees. Proceeds, Conjuror, Lons-- dale, Paris, Brancas, Jason, Prince Silverwings, . Batts and Commodore were all fine two-year-5 olds and it will not be at all surprising if ten candidates go to the post this year.
