SARATOGA TURF NOTES Jockey George Cooper, who was injured at Empire City in a fall, made his first appearance today and witnessed the races from the grandstand. Cooper is progressing rapidly, hut will be an absentee from the saddle for several weeks. Following an examination by Dr. R. "W. McCully, El Kantara, the French-bred steeplechaser which was purchased by the Green-tree Stable from J. E. Davis for a reported price of 0,000, was turned over to his new trainer, Vincent Powers, this morning. "While Victor Vivaudou will offer all of his horses in training at an auction to be conducted by the Thoroughbred Sales Company in the paddock Tuesday, it does not mean the permanent retirement of the owner of the Riviera Stable from the turf. He hopes to be back in racing again in 1925, but has determined to retire from the sport for the remainder of this season. After the first race James Howe worked four of the Harry Payne Whitney juveniles. Noah worked three-quarters in 1:14, running the first quarter in :23 and the half in :48. Tho Bat ran the distance in 1:15, and Lawless in 1:18. Backbone showed a readiness for his race tomorrow when he ran five-eighths in 1 :03, running the first quarter in :24 and the half in :48. Elzear, the winner of the steeplechase for Thomas Hitchcock, was bred by his brother Francis R. Hitchcock in France. He is a well-made chestnut son of Sandy Hook Eleninea, and his performance was decidedly an impressive one for a three-year-old. In the sale of horses in training set for to-morrow there is another of the importations to go under the hammer that was bred by Mr. Hitchcock. This one is Quicksand, a winner in this country.
