WELLFINDER IN FRONT Wins Catskill Stakes at Saratoga for Mrs. R. I. Miller. Three -Year-Old Contest to Initiate Leopardess Beats Breakfast Bell. m SARATOGA SPRINGS, N, T., Aug. IS. Wellfinder, the son of Broomstick "Wonder that races for Mrs. R. I. Miller, was winner of the stake offering this afternoon, when he took down the seven-eighths of the Catskill, a selling event that was worth ,900 to the winner. It was one of the best finishes of the day and he was showing the way to the Salubria Stables Scoop and the Rancocas Stables Rigel at the end. The weather was a bit cool for August and wraps were in order, but the attendance was large. The track had received a thorough wetting by the rain of Sunday, but had dried out nicely, and while not fast was in good safe condition. Eight were withdrawn from the Catskill before post time, and it just left six to start. Little time was lost at the barrier, and while the start was a good one, Costi-gan, as usual, was slow to ba under way, while Rigel went in the air and was at a slight disadvantage. Little Breuning had Wellfinder off running and hustled him along all the way. Scoop and Rigel were right after him and Laverne Fator had a good hold of Rigel and he was going so well as to suggest that he could go to the front at the first asking. Scoop was permitted to drop back slightly leaving the backstretch and on the turn for home Rigel was close after the leader. When Wellfinder did not stop as he expected, Fator roused Rigel sharply when inside the eighth post and he swerved over to the inside, crossing on Wellfinders heels. Then Scoop developed a second burst of speed and he charged down on the outside. This sent Breuning to a frantically energetic ride on Wellfinder, and the old son of Broomstick hung to his task long enough to be winner by a neck. Rigel was just a length further back and Cockney lasted to outfinish Costigan, though the Blakely gelding had closed a big gap from his bad beginning. Donges, the other starter, was at no time a contender and was a bad last at the end. SECOND FOR PARKE. Ivan Parke brought his second winner of the day home when he piloted Harry Payne Whitneys Initiate in the mile for three-year-olds that was the fifth offering. At the end the filly was doing her best to beat the Ascot Stables Ten Eyck, with the Oak Ridge Stables Plough Boy rather a distant third. The only other starter was Samuel Louis Donnelly, and he was away so badly as to have no chance. Ten Eyck forced most of the pace while Initiate and Plough Boy were rated along under restraint back of him. This was the order until approaching the stretch turn where Fator called on Plough Boy and he failed utterly to respond, though Initiate answered the call of Parke and went to the pacemaker. Through the final eighth Ten Eyck hung on with unexpected courage but the filly proved too good for him, and under a vigorous ride she Avas going away passing the judges. The seven-eighths for fillies and mares brought victory to the Greentree Stables Leopardess over Edward R. Bradleys Breakfast Bell with Anna Marrone II., beating W. R. Coes Elvina, the only other starter. There was little to the race. Parke had Leopardess away in front and -she was good enough to lead throughout. At the end she was being hurried along to make the score certain but Avas two lengths to the good at the end. Through the early racing it Avas Anna Marrone II., that chased the Avinner, but she began to Aveaken before the stretch Avas reached, Avhile Leopardess Avas going along Avell clear and under a slight restraint. Then at the head of the stretch Williams came Avith a great rush on the outside, with Breakfast Bell. Parke Avas quick to sense the danger and he shook up Leopardess and hustled her along smartly to the end. EI- Continueil on twelfth page. WELLFINDER IN FRONT Continued from first page. vina ran a rather dull race and was at no time a serious contender. Another good juvenile came out of Kentucky when J. C. Milams Kentucky Cardinal was shipped on to Saartoga Springs. He was winner of the closing five and a half furlongs dash with ridiculous ease over "William Zeigler Jr.s Mirador, while the Rancocas Stables Silver Fox was the one to race third. There was not much to the contest, for Kelsay sent Kentucky Cardinal into a good early lead and he just romped along in front to make a show of his company. Mirador hung on well, while Silver Fox was forced to go exceedingly wide at the head of the stretch and, while he closed some ground, he never threatened the winner. W. J. Howards Chink was winner of the opening five and a half furlong dash, for selling plater two-year-olds when he led home Richard T. "Wilsons Faddist with James Butlers Bright Steel rather a distant third. Chink was alert at the post and jumped into the lead at the start with Bright Steel second and Faddist not far away. Going to the far turn Faddist moved up resolutely and put Bright Steel away but he showed a disposition to bear out and lost some ground. Chink held to his lead and went a bit wide swinging for home, but Faddist also went wide and Maiben had trouble in keeping him straight In the meantime Parke made a short turn into the straight with Bright Steel, and for an instant he moved up, but the going was deep on the inside and Chink held to his command. Then it was Chink that tried to bear out and McAtee had to rap him on the head to keep him straight. Faddist was coming again at the end to be a fast going second, but he was beaten a length by the tired Chink. The steeplechase of the day was over the short course, and for maidens. It brought Victory to the famous old all green of Thomas Hitchcock when Elzear a three-year-old son of Sandy Hook and Elninea, was an easy winner from P. T. Malones Graylette with "Walter J. Salmons Charlton the one to race third. Bayard "Warrens Stockmar was the only other to finish, when Cooncan hobbled at the front field liverpool, the second turn of the course, unseating Sims. For one turn of the course, Stockmar was showing the way while Elzear trailed the company. Cooncan was rating along back of the leader and Graylette and Charlton were not far away. Through the back field Sims moved up with Cooncan but each time Stockmar moved away when challenged, and while it took something out of him, it demonstrated that Cooncan would not do. Swinging into the front field for the. last turn of the course Elzear began to move up and when the water was reached, he was not far from the lead and. jumping well. Then it was at the next turn that Cooncan was eliminated and before the back field was reached Stockmar was through and the Hitchcock three-year-old had taken command. As McNair moved with him Cheyne called on Graylette and he made his move altogether too soon. The filly moved up resolutely, but Elzear held her safe and though she made a second bid later the son of Sandy Hook was master of the situation to win with something to spare. For a three-year-old the performance was a creditable one and it is entirely possbile that Elzear will develop into a useful sort of racer. .
