NEW HOPE A SURPRISE » Edward Arlington Color Bearer Shows Good Performance. ■ ■ Nose Finish Between Freedoms Call and Hidden Jewel in the Main Bowie Race. BOWIE. Md., April 2.— Edward Arlingtons Now Hope furnished the surprise of the day when she was winner of the third race, boating home Lady Bors, with Romping Home saving- third from Poor Sport. Lady Boss and Trapdale were the ones to cut out the running and Romping Home was not far away, while little Brown kept New Hope well up with her company and she was galloping strongly under her feather impost of 87 pounds. After Trapdale had headed Lady Boss going to the stretch turn, the Winfrey mare came again and an eighth out she was two lengths clear, but New Hope had gone around on the outside and through that last eighth, under Browns vigorous riding, she wore down Lady Boss to be first home by a length and going away at the end. Trap-dale quit badly after his challenge after going half of the distance. Ed Arlington was on hand to see New Hope perform and he cxpessed a confidnce before the running that New Hope would share in some part of the purse. For the second day of the Bowie meeting It was a card framed for the platers that was offered, but the sport was excellent, with the fields so well matched that there was a real contest in almost every race. What was meant for the best race of the day was a six and a half furlongs dash, and it resulted in a nose finish between C. O. Halls Freedoms Call and Mrs. A. Swenkes Hidden Jewel, while Seths Flower was the one to save third from Hour more. HIDDEN IIWII PACEMAKER. In this race Hidden Jewel cut all the pace, but he was never mere than a length lb the good, while Freedoms Call and Seths | Flower were closely lapped back of him. j and Hourmoro was In third pteM and well] within striking distance. This order was maintained for almost the | entire route, and Hidden Jewel stuck to his task in resolute fashion, but right at the end Freedoms Call caught him and in the last stride he dropped his nose down in ] front. Seths Flower hung on under the ] final drive and dropped back a couple of lengths, while Houimnre failed to respond to the call of Meyers. The seven-eighths of the fifth race, also under claiming conditions, resulted in a victory for 1. C. Winfreys Top Sergeant. Everglade raced to second place and third was the portion of Eager. The start was a good one and Everglade j ! was the one to cut out most of the pace, with ] j Sun Lady not far away and Eager always ■ in the first flight. Harvey avoided thatij early pace with Top Sergeant, but he was I well up and he gradually improved his po-1 I sition as the rare progressed. Stutts stole away to a lead of two lengths with Everglade heading for the stretch turn,] but there Harvey began to move in earnest1 with Top Sergeant and when the straight was reached he was in second place and right at the heels of the Swenke plater. In the last eighth he came on to be winner by a length, while Everglade rtuck it out to] I I beat the tiring Eager four lengths for second place. ■ ASY FOR A I, BOVI. Al Boyd was an easy winner of the mile and a sixteenth of the sixth race by scoring from Pete the Scribe, while Rupee saved I third. In this running Prima Donna fell in the back stretch and was badly lamed as a] result of the accident. Kirkcaldy was the first one to show the way and Prima Donna was chasing along with him while Pete the Scribe and Al Boyd followed in remarkably close order while l.iexington Maid was unable to find her way through and was far back. When Prima ] Donna met with an accident Al Boyd ran to the front with a good lead and never left the result in doubt to be winner by three lengths. Pete the Scribe was doing his best to outstay Rupee and Ixington Maid closed some ground to be fourth. The opening race was a half-mile dash for juveniles of the selling plater variety, and K. K. Brysons Plnnpur Girl proved best when she outgamed J. Serios Freda D., to be winner by a neck, with J. P. Jones Iidy Chilton saving third from Royal Kiss. Freda P.. with the advantage of her education at Miami, was most alert at the barrier, and as she left running Demayo, who had the mount, crossed in front of the others sharply and piled up some of the runners rather badly. She dashed out into a lead of four lengths ami Smackover went after her, with Nereid in third place, while Flapper Cirl was just a bit slow to find her racing legs. Demayo still had Freda D. three lengths to the good heading for the stretch turn, but Continued on twelfth pace. NEW HOPE A SURPRISE , Continued from firtt page. he was of absolutely no help to the filly and through the stretch Flapper Girl, finishing with a rush, wore her down to win Roinp; away. Lady Chilton also finished resolutely to be just a length and a half back of the Miami filly. There was a Whitney score in the five and a half furlongs of the second race when Teapot, a three-year-old daughter of Bro unstick and Mrs. Trubbel, led home Knight of Merei II., with Samuel Ross Ensign saing third place from John S. Mosby. From a good start it was Knight of Merci II. that cut out the pace, with Ensign and Teapot chasing after him and the others in fairly close order. Bruns, one that had been widely mentioned, was in fourth place thr .ugh the early stages and he worked his way into third place when the stretch was reached, but that was his limit and he faded away when the real test came through the last eighth. Tbete Teapot finished resolutely to win going away by a length and a half, while Knight of Meni II. just lasted to save second place from Ensign by a nose. John S. Mosby, Bruns and White Marsh followed, elo.-ely lapped in the order named.
