POLYFENA NARROWLY Outgames Embryo in Final Strides of the Mendota Purse Provides Most Exciting Finish of ofDay Day Big Crowd Despite DespiteThreatening Threatening Weather AURORA III June 11 The Mendota Ptirsc for twoyearolds at fiveeighths served as the feature event on the program at Exposition Park this afternoon and pro ¬ vided the closest and most exciting finish of the day E J OConnells Polyfena proved a surprise in taking the measure of her opponents in this race the result of which was in doubt until the final strides Josie llartinan forced a fast early pace which proved to be her undoing when a general closing up by the ones in closest contention came at the top of the stretch The early leader was in distress and could not stall off the on rushing challengers Embryo was seen to forge into a slight lead closely pressed by Queen of Sheba Then on the outside of the leading pair came Polyfena and under extreme punishment the latter managed to outgame Embryo in the last few strides Queen of Sheba gave way slightly and had to be satisfied with third place Josie Hartman meanwhile had quit badly and dropped to fourth place Considering the heat which prevailed here this afternoon coupled with the threatening weather and the heavy condition of the racing strip after the rains which fell at intervals during the forenoon the brand of sport was up to the highest standard and was witnessed by a surprisingly large at ¬ tendance including many of the fair sex as this was ladies day dayThe The opener called for platers to race five and a half furlongs and resulted in a handy victory for Double T This son of Boots and Saddle found the muddy going to his liking and assuming an early command made every post a winning one Parnell Lad wore down Pol Roger in the stretch drive for second place after being outrun in the early stages Twelve starters were dispatched in a good manner in this race but much crowd ¬ ing resulted during the first quarter mile mileA A W Crafts Mclntosh made a show of his opponents in annexing the second race by a wide margin The winner energetically rid ¬ den by jockey Sporri gained the lead in the first quarter and on straightening out in the stretch drew away from the others decisively to win with speed in reserve Realize from the stable of C H Trotter took the measure of the other starters when coming up from the rear in the last quarter the latter easily disposed of Miss Aji find the tiring My lliddy Miss Aji gained third place My Biddy was a sufferer of sharp interference at the first turn which ruined her chances Kerry Girl and Furor were tiring badly In the stretch after racing prominently in the early stages stagesGKXTUY GKXTUY 1OrrLAIl AVIXXKU AVIXXKUGentry Gentry scored auspiciously for the public in the third and proved to be a very popu ¬ lar winner ISitsy lice cut out all the pace In this nice drawing away into a long lead In the first half mile and looked an easy winner entering the stretch She however liegaii tiring rapdly and Gentry alertly ridden by II Hutton was quick to take advantage of this and closing strongly in the last eighth easily overhauled the lead ¬ ers and held the race safe at the end Bitsy I lee managed to save second place comfortably Miss Ida Brown after racing extremely wide during the early stages came with a big rush near the end and outstayed Ilarilek for third place placeIn In the fourth event Pompous scored a good victory over Runquoi after the latter had drawn away into a commanding lead in the first seven eighths of the distance which was one mile The last mentioned wis quick to begin and under a rousing ride looked an cusy winner an eighth out but Pompous came with a fist rush on the outside near the end and outfinishing Runquoi got up in the last few yards Runquoi saved second place easily while Dr A Lowenthal came from far in tin rear to be up in time to catch Gnok Friar at the end for the show verdict Greek Friar showed a fine effort here hereSand Sand Mooneys Overtake accounted for the sixth race at one mile The winner was cleverly and confidently ridden by jockey W Stamper and attended the early pace closely to the stretch was then slightly urged and overhauling the leaders rapidly drew away to a decisive victory near the end Senti ¬ mental Tommie finishir strongly out ¬ stayed Fairlight the pacemaker for second place This race was run in a heavy rain jind the horses were hard to distinguish
