ADRIA AN EASY WINNER Proves Too Fast for Rivals in Val Cartier Handicap Barton Slcipltcliase to IJlack Fox After a aSplendid Splendid Contest Through the IiiId Attendance Increased HAMILTON Ont June 11 The Val Car tier Handicap which featured the card of ¬ fered by the Hamilton Jockey Club brought forth a band of sprinters to go threequar ¬ ters and with the running came an easy score for Walter J Salmons shifty filly Adria From a good start Tamarind was rushed into a brief lead closely attended by Ensile and Knight of Merci II These three raced along at a fast clip from the start and it was certain that one or the other would crack when they were called on for the supreme test Ensile succeeded in doing away with the Seagram starter turning into the home stretch while Knight of Merci II held on gamely to the eighth post In the meantime Adria which was outpaced to the top of the stretch found an opening and slipping by Contract she was guided to the outside of the remainder of the field when straightened out and took command midway of the stretch and Mundeii kept her going under her best clip winning by six lengths lengthsWELL WELL BALANCED CAKD CAKDThere There was a decided increase in the at ¬ tendance here today and the card that was offered was a well balanced one The best offering of the day was the Val Cartier Han ¬ dicap with the steeplechase as a secondary feature Clear weather again prevailed and faster time was made in the various races racesA A tight fit came with the running of the Barton Steeplechase which was decided ever the two mile course when Black Fox racing in the colors of Gordon Perry took the lions share of the purse from the stoutly supported Dragon de Vertu which was sec ¬ ond by two lengths over Irish Jig The Student was the one to cut out the early pace and he was ten lengths in front of Hocking Horse going to the fourth fence but on taking the fifth he fell and Rock ¬ ing Horse went into the lead under suf ference Black Fox was within striking distance of the leader all the last mile and when he made his last effort it bore fruit as he wore Rocking Horse down and had enough left to withstand the fast going Dragon de Vertu VertuPRO3IISING PRO3IISING JUVENILES JUVENILESMrs Mrs L A Livingston showed a good juvenile in the opening race a maiden dash for Canadian foals in Point of Honor a chesnut son of Kingship Claver had the mount on the Livingston starter and had him away from the barrier fast but he was not good enough to take command Melva Hose a first time starter went into the lead soon after the start and showed the way for the first threeeighths Turning into the stretch Claver called on his mount and the response was there as his mount passed tho pacemake at the eighth post and was winner by a little more than a length Fleur de Lis drove into the place division by a short head from Melva Rose which showed a good performance for his first outing outingC C C Smithsoiis Oriental Hope upset the talent in the second race over the mile and seventy yards route when he made the pace from the rise of the barrier and after dis ¬ posing of Byng Boy and Senate in the first threequarters had enough in reserve to withstand the fast finishing favorite Chula Vista The latter was far out of contention in the early running and he was forced co make up a lot of ground to get second place Ho was iHiaten by a length and a half by the winner while he was three in front of Senate which managed to save the minor award by a head from Byng Boy
