USUAL FRIDAYS PROGRAM No Special Attraction Provided at Belmont Park Defeat of Cartoonist ami Scorcher Out ¬ standing Incidents of Afternoon Klgcl Falls Lame During Race NEW YORK N Y June 11 Rather an interesting number of overnight races made up the program for the Friday sport at Bel ¬ mont Park It was a day that was not without its surprises when Scorcher was beaten after leaving the post slowly Rigel went so lame in his race that his winning chance went aglimmering and Cartoonist went lame in this race and his winning of the day was easily beaten by Bob Odoms Light View But the weather was delightful for the sport though a high wind made fast time out of the question and there was a big crowd on hand handThe The mile race that saw Light View the winner was run as the fifth and just half a dozen went to the post Before post time it was agreed that it was little more than a formality for Bud Fishers Cartoonist He was opposed by Silver Song Brig o Doon Little Asbestos and Son Ami besides Light View ViewThe The start was a good one though Little Asbestos left so sluggishly as to be far out of the running iii the early stages Early in the action Thurber took Light View into command and when Cartoonist went around the others to reach second place it had narrowed to a twohorse affair Car ¬ toonist was under restraint back of the Odom colt but Light View was also under wraps as was found when Kellum asked the Fisher gelding to make his run That was at the stretch turn and when Kellum called on his mount Thurber only had to shake up Light View and his lead was not threatened threatenedAn An eighth from home it was apparent that Light View would be an easy winner and at the end he was still two lengths before Cartoonist Little Asbestos after his slug ¬ gish beginning closed a big gap but he was four lengths back of Cartoonist and the others were strung out outThis This race was a decided improvement over the last previous performance of Light View but on that occasion the colt was racing threequarters over the Widener Course and it may be that he is one thoroughbred that does not like that particular course courseMelmor Melmor from the Victory Stable was an easy winner of the opening dash over the threequarters of the Widener Course He scored by two lengths but there was a large element of luck in the vicory when he was off running while Mrs Swenkes Scorcher was away slowly Edward Johnsons Rose ¬ wood II raced to second place but he was only a head before the fast finishing Scorcher Always sluggish at the barrier Scorcher was particularly so in this race and he was a bad last through the early stages He closed an immense gap and with better fortune at the start would undoubtedly have won but he was just a stride short of being up to take the place placeFor For the second a race at one mile for platers was offered and it resulted in a good finish when G C Winfreys Insulate was up to beat home G A Marshalls Gold Button and J Rotunnos Johnny Campbell was third The only other starters were Continued on twentieth page USUAL FRIDAYS PROGRAM Continued from first pace Rigel and Dream of the Valley and the first named came out of the race so badly lamed that it will probably be a long time before he is seen under silks again againSherman Sherman that races under the silks of Mrs A Swenke scored his fourth consecu ¬ tive victory when he was first home in the mile of the claiming handicap that was the fourth race It was one of the best finishes of the day when he was driven out to beat W A Wollmans Hayward and Mrs R L Millers Roland was just a nose further back and finishing in a manner that would have surely seen him the winner in a few more strides
