GERMAN COLTS AT BOWIE First Yearling Importations From Harzburg Stud to Make Debut in the United States. BOWIE, Md.. April 1. — Three of the yearlings of last year bred at the Harzburg stud in Germany that were sold at Saratoga last summer, they being the first consignment from a German breeding establishment to the American summer sales, have been training all spring at Benning and their performances at Bowie will be watched with curious interest. The youngsters are the following : Los Angeles, a bay clot oy Dark Ronald — Longwy, for which V. L Hernstadt paid ,500. Wallfahrer. a lay co.. by Wallenstein — By-tham. for which J. S. Herkness of Bydall. Pa., paid ,800. Menschenfreund, a bay colt by Ulster King — Modedame, which was atso bought by Mr. Herkness for ,200. These youngsters worked briefly last fall when they were broken. Los Angeles by Selby Burch. the other two by W .V. Walsh. As two-year-olds they are shaping up handsomely, being sound, fast and willing. On what the youngsters do in Maryland this spring and some others in other stables accomplish later on about New York hangs the success or failure of the next Harzburg stud sale and the question of whether there will be other importations from Germany after this year. Dark Konald. a son of Bay Ronald, has been in Germany since 1913 and his progeny have been winning in all parts of the world the past ten or a dozen years. He has sired successful stock horses in Son-in-Law. Ambassador IV., Brown Prince, Magpie and Dark Legend. Son-in-Law is getting distance runners in Great Britain, Ambassador IV*. and Brown Prince in the United States. Magpie in Australia, Dark Legend in France. The dam of Los Angeles is a daughter of St. Malcolm and a granddaughter of St. Simon. Burch believes that his ,500 colt will prove worth every cent of his purchase price. Wallenstein. the daddy of Wallfahrer, is a son of Dark Ronald and Weiner Madel, she a daughter of William the Third and granddaughter of St. Simon. The mother of Wallfahrer is from a strong American family, that of Domino, Correction. Yankee. Hamburg. Zev and Audacious, no less. Butham is a daughter of Elopement and Bithit and Bithia a daughter of St. Andrew and Lyde-lia. she a daughte - of Darefin and Lydia. Bithia was one of the mares sent by America to Germany in 1910. She was bred in California by the late James Ben Ali Hag-gin. Ulster King, the sire of Menschenfreund, is a son of Persimmon and through him a grandson of St. Simon. He Ulster King won a Princess of Wales Stakes and a Hastings Plate in England. Modedame, the mother of Menschenfreund. is a granddaughter of St. Simon, through Pekin. -m
