t TURF NOTES FROM BOWIE f $ $ BOWIE. Md., April 1. Wm. Armstrong, the publisher, Isador Strump and Ned Garmise were among the New York delegation. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hendrick were visitors from New York to attend the opening. Hendrick campaigned a string under Squire Billy Olivers care several years ago. Among the racing veterans present were Ike Hackelberg, Aaron Klugman, Sam Turner, Senator Butch Joyce, Horace Paul. Dave Sonnyman. Brose Hover, Joseph P. Murphy, Major R. J. Kunkel, Mortimer J. Lynch and Ned a-.ynch. Buster Bedwell, who is assisting his father in the training of a large string, has taken over the engagement books of D. Dubois and L. Steinhart. The veteran Ben Beach is handling the engagement books of J. C. Mergler, A. Fewell and W. Smith. The latter is spending his mornings at Pimlico assisting trainer Gwynne Tompkins in the preparation of the Brook-meade Stables string. Col. S. L .James and his son. S. L.. Jr.. Joseph Kilcoyne, Euclid Allard, Harry McKenna, Dick Mendez, Martin Wright and Peter Christiansen were among the handi-cappers present. Jockey D. Mergler, who recently suffered a mild attack of influenza, is reported convalescing at his Havre de Grace home. Sylvester W. Labrot, the lumber prince who recently brought the stallion Sir Greysteel and twenty brood mares to this country to establish a breeding farm near Annapolis, was a visitor in company with Wm. Woodward, vice-chairman of The Jockey Club and master of the nearby Belair Stud. James A. Walton, president of the Annapolis Trust Co., and the Scotch trainer, J. A. Baird were with them. Captain J. K. Walbridge of the Turf Printing Company came down from Saratoga Springs to supervise the operation of his perambulating program printing outfit. H. Kehres, wuo came from Chicago in company with William Stoddard and trainer Thomas Doyle in search of racing material for a mid-western campaign, got into action quickly. Mr. Kehres claimed Papa Blinks from the second race for ,500. It cost the owner of the horses Accomplish. Hedgefence and Canister 2.50 each to with-from their engagements. The stewards enforced the "no scratch below eight without 5 per cent of the purse payment" rule. Edward Burke, general manager of the Havre de Grave course, has taken up his duties at the Harford County course. He is being ably assisted by his brothers. Steven and Lawrence, and track superintendent •lames Ross. Tom Gallagher, the veteran Baltimorian who spends his winters eulogizing the merits of poultry and dog foods throughout the countrys leading, shows, returned to assume his duties in connection with the mutuel department
