RIP RAPS FINAL WORKOUT ■ Sage Stables Colt Gallops Mile and a Quarter in 2:101/5. ♦ Scapa Flow, Saxon, Baddy Bauer, Bostonian, Whiskery and Black Panther Are Arrivals at Churchill Downs. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky.. May 11.— The Sage Stables Rip Rap, the first of the eastern horses to arrive in quest of Derby honors, had his final workout this morning. He ran the full Derby distance of one mile and a quarter in 2:10%. handily. The trial was under the supervision of trainer Max Hirsch, and the colt was ridden by Steve ODonnell, who will ride him Saturday. With the three-year-old Flippant, a stable companion as pacemaker. Rip Rap ran the first quarter in £*%. half-mile in :4S%, where he raced away from Flippant. He ran the three-quarters in 1 :14 and was pulling hard at the bit as he finished the mile in 1 rlS/s ; thereafter ODonnell urged him lightly as he finished his work, but he pulled up surprisingly fresh, and it was agreed that he could have gone in faster time had he been permitted. The trial was over a track that was not at its best, and to secure good footing, ODonnell had to keep the colt a good distance out from the inner rail. W. H. Whitehouses Royal Julian was another intended Derby starter given his final preparation today. Trainer Lon Johnson, who has been ill for several days, braved the adverse weather to di ect the colts work. Royal Julian worked the Derby distance in 2:11. He showed to advantage in running the mile in 1 A.i and mile and an c ighth in 1 :"»6— and was eased up at the finish. He galoped the first quarter in :25. half-mile in :5i1i and three-quat t.-rs in 1 :17~;. This aspirant for Derby honors has a host of admirers among the horsemen here and is ready for his best racing. Trainer Johnson engagid Walter Lilhy to ride the horse Saturday.
