This race was the Old Virginia Purse, at a mile and seventy yards and, while Willie K. gave an excellent performance, the riding of both Prickly Heat and Aucilla helped him along considerably to his victory. There was a drop in temperature, but it was not uncomfortably cold, and while clouds floated over the course all afternoon, there was no rain and the going was at its best. Just half a dozen went to the post for the Old Virginia Purse and Prickly Heat proved more alert than the others at the start. He was off runnin„. but Lieutenant II. was right after him and La Morte third, while Schaefer was going wide with Aucilla and Willie K. was bringing up the rear. Prickly Heat and Lieutenant II. continued to show the way through the back stretch, and the first named was under restraint to set the pace. La Morte raced along close after the leaders "and, nearing the half-mile post, Schaefer moved up with Aucilla. but he continued to go wide with the Smithson candidate. Comet and Willie K. were farther back, but both were galloping well. l.VDElt RESTRAINT. Long continued to keep a hold on Prickly Heat as Lieutenant II. went into command after leaving the back stretch and while Ia Morte hung close to the first two he could not improve his position, while Aucilla, after threatening to pass them all, tired. This was the order as the field swung into the stretch and Lieutenant II. looked all over the winner until Willie K. came with a great rush on the outside and, catching the son of Junior in the last sixteenth, was winner by three- quarters of a length. Lieutenant II. , in turn, just lasted to save the place by a head from the fast-finishing Comet, and Prickly Heat and -uicilla were both well beaten. The mile of the Magnolia Purse, a condi-. tion race for three-year-olds, brought about a good contest with R. L. Freemans Corporal winner from O. D. Wideners Arcturus, and Walter J. Salmons Congress closed a big gap to beat Frank Hayes Memoria for third place. Memoria and Corporal were the ones to set the pace, but at the head of the stretch Me- moria went out rather badly and it cost her all share in the purse. Arcturus, after racing in third place most of the way. saved ground on the stretch turn and gained some ground, but was always held safe by the winner. Right at the start, which was a good one, Pascuma pulled Congress up slightly, with the result that he was in last place on the first turn. He closed a big gap to be third and, with better fortune at the start, might have been the winner. ItKA SfORKS. The two-year-old race of the day, and the first offering, was a half-mile dash for maidens of the plater variety. R. L. Freemans Rea was winner, when she led home Mrs. J. W. Beans Artie Kay, and third fell to Caravan from the Xevada Stock Farm Stable. Caravan and Rea were the ones to cut out all the running and early in the action they drew away from the others, with Rea setting the pace. In the run through the stretch the filly proved the gamer, and she was going away at the end, while Artie Kay, after meeting with some early interference, was along, to take second place from the tiring Caravan. Recognition, the G. D. Widener starter, was unfortunate in this running, when he was knocked back right after the break and he was repeatedly blocked. Single Star, racing for H. R. Dulany. de-v feated a band of maidens in the three-quar-v ters second race. This was also framed for cheap ones, but the winner proved herself a good filly when she easily finished out the . distance in 1:11%. K. K. Brysons Leyland raced to second place and J. McGees Hon! Soit saved third from II. G. Bedwells Deposition. Single Star was so much the best that there was not much to the race. She began well from the inside position and jockey Brooks at once took her into a good lead. and she galloped along under Slight restraint all the way to win with plenty to spare. Leyland was in early difficulty and was forced to race on the outside to reach a con- tending position. Honi Soit had no excuse and tired in the run home after having raced second to tha winner from the start, _______________________ Continued on eighth page. i 1 1 :, ;. n e I, - - a e P FEATURE TO WILLIE K. Continued from first page. There was a good finish in the six and one-1 half furlongs third race when Laddie Buck, from the Woodlawn Stable, under a well-judged ride by Robertson, was winner from J. M. Collins Son Ami, while Body Guard saved third place from Miss Fayette. It was a three-horse race all the way when Son Ami atid Body Guard went into com-f mand with Laddie Buck not far back of them. Robertson had the winner away fast but was content to race him back of the other two until the stretch was reached. There he made his winning rush in the final eighth, while Son Ami outlasted Body Guard, which had been forced to go a bit wide most of the way. The others were in strung-out order, while The Roll Call failed to leave the post and was galloped over the course back of the others. »
