DOWNS STAKE DATES « Program Book for Twenty-Three Day Meeting Announced. « Clark Handicap Opening Feature Saturday, May 12 — Liberal , Array of Purses. + ! LOUIS VI LLE, Ky„ April 9.— The program [ book for ih. tvventy-tliree day meeting at "* Churchill Downs, beginning May 8 and last- -ing until June -, has just oeen issued to the A local horsemen, and it is quite up to the i usual high standard maintained by racing secretary William H. Shelley, who has made up the racing schedule at the local track lor a number of years. According to the conditions of the races . carded all classes of horses are well taken j care of, there being seven races carded for 1 each day, varying in distance from four and one-half furlongs, for juveniles, to one and . one-quarters miles for the older division. The usual liberal purses are offered and r.inge from Sl,2u0 to ,000, the former being the minimum purse to be offered. Six important stakes are to be decided during thi- meeting and the entries to these , are contained in the program book. The .lark Handicap will feature the program on the first day of the meeting, Saturday. May 12. On Friday. May 18. the Debutante Slakes, for juvenile fillies, will have its annual renewal. The following afternoon, May lit. the ; Kentucky Derby will be the big attraction for its fifty-fourth running. The Grainger Memorial Handicap is set for Saturday, May 26, and on May 30. Memorial Day, the Bash-ford Manor Stakes, for juvenile colts and geldings, will be decided. Saturday, June 2. the closing day of the meeting, will witness the fifty-fourth running of the Kentucky Oaks. The program book is handsomely composed and the front cover is embellished with a picture of Whiskery, last years Derby "winner. KU ING OFFICIALS. The racing officials for the Downs meeting, which were approved by the Kentucky State Racing Commission, include: Stewards. Charles F. Price, S. C. Nuckols. T. C. Bradley and Elijah Hogg: placing judges, W. H. Shelley and X. II. McClelland; racing secretary and handieapper, W. H. Shelley ; entry clerfc and handieapper, J. S. Wallace ; clerk of the scales, X. H. MeClellan". ; starter. William Hamilton: paddock judge. Dr. J. T. Chawk; patrol judge, W. EL Phillips; timer, S. K. Hughes; track superintendent. Thomas Young; manager of pari-mutuels, E. A. Weidekamp. W. H. Shelley will leave her next Monday for Lexington to assume his duties as racing secretary at the track of the Kentucky Association. The license committee of the State Racing Con. mission, consisting of Chas. F. Price, S. C. Xuckols and T. C. Bradley, will meet in Lexington at 2 p. m. next Friday for the purpose of going over applications for trainer and jockey licenses. .Judge Charles F. Price will go to Chicago nexc .Monday, April 16, to attend a meeting of the Illinois Turf Association, as the representative of the Lincoln Fields track. POOL l ~ ARRIVAL. Jockey Earl PjoI is a recent arrival at hia home in this city. Pending the opening of the Lexington l.eeting April 21. when he ; is due to report to trainer J. Baker, his new contract employer, Pool is keeping fit by . helping gallop the horses in the stable of Jake Lowenstein at Douglas Park. Jockey -Noble Walters, a Louisville lad. who joined the stable of J. J. Coughlin last summer, will do most of the lightweight riding for that stable this year. Trainer Miller speaks highly of the lads ability as a , jikey. The stable of J. McPherson is the latest ; big establishment to reach here from Xew Orleans. The stable comprised twenty head I and arrived here in good condition. W. S. Heaten is a recent arrival from Xew r Orleans with his stable of nine horses, but t he was unable to secure stabling room for the horses at either of the local tracks. Trainer Tommy Taylor was advised that t Bit of Glory had foaled a chestnut colt by Paieines at Col. J. Swigert Taylors Scotland I Farm, near Frankfort.
