LOUISVILLE DERBY GALLOPS j Cartago and Golden Racket in Best Workout of Day. ] * Track Sloppy From Recent Rains — Dowagiac Displays Ability to Negotiate Difficult rooting. * LOUISVILLE. Ky.. April 21.— The R. E. Leichleiter Derby colt Cartago and Golden Racket, also eligible for the race, but the joint property of Leichleiter and Holmes, turned in the best work of any of the Derby j candidates that performed at the local tracks . this morning when they worked three-quarters in 1 :18. The course was sloppy from the Friday night and early morning down- pour of rain and their efforts were all the • more meritorious on this account. Trainer John J. Flanagan had the colts i start at the three-quarters pole, and ■ they raced as a team for the entire distance, with the exception of a sixteenth in the stretch, where Golden Racket turned wide and Cart- I ago took a half length lead, but Golden Racket cut this advantage down until they flashed by the stand head and head. The fractional time for the first half mile was :24%, :49%. This pair of candidates for the classic does not fail to meet a workout engagement whether the track is wet or dry and they are all advanced in their training. Blackwood and Dowagiac, owned by the Bloomfield Stable, made their appearance on the track for a trial and began from the three-quarters post, traversing the distance in the fractional time of :2T, :56, 1 :24. Dowagiac was the best in the going, as he was drawing away from the black colt at the finish. Oregon Fir went three-quarters for trainer Shelby West in :53 for the first half mile and 1 :21 for the three-quarters. Colonel Shaw ran a five-eighths in 1 :07%. This colt of the W. H. Whitehouse stable, has been on the slow side for several days since he developed a slight cold, but is rounding to nicely now. Misstep and Mop Up were simply cantered and other Derby candidates were given slow gallops at the Downs.
