I | , CHURCHILL DOWNS GARDENS New Beauty Spots in Clubhouse Inclosure Include Rustic and Rock Gardens. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 21.— Col. Matt J. Winn, president of the American Turf Association, has added a few more of the touches that have made Churchill Downs a model of horticultural art. In the club house inclosure he has had laid out two gardens that even overshadow the lovely infield of the Downs as beauty spots. One is a rock garden laid out around a fountain. The rocks themselves depict the artistry of the designer. They may well have undergone the erosion of centuries and out of their honeycombed sides grow various mosses and tiny plants. The whole is exquisitely studded and bordered writh dwarf shrubs, evergreens and rock garden plants. The other garden is ideally rustic, surrounded with a rustic fence which incloses lovely beds of early summer plants. In the center is a sun dial which is approached by walks from three sides of the garden. Officials of Churchill Downs are much interested in the Jarvis starting gate, which will be given a trial at the present Lexington meeting. It is believed that if it proves successful at Lexington it will be tried here. The local meeting opens Tuesday, May 8.
