; i I 1 | I NOTABLE RACE AND HORSE The Melbourne Cup, the greatest of Australian races, has an unbroken record of ! I sixty-seven runnings, being established in I 1861. Originally the race was worth about ,000, but in thirty years grew to 0,000. Since its institution approximately ,000,000 have been distributed among its winners. Carbine, one of the best horses reared in Australia, won the Melbourne Cup in 1890, carrying 145 pounds, a remarkable perform-i ance in a race at two miles. Carbine was later purchased by the Duke of Richmond and shipped to England, where he sired Spearmint, winner of the Epsom Derby and the Grande Prix de Taris.
