April 23.— Silver Song, 5 racing for Mrs. C. Garrigan, accounted for . the New Southern Hotel Handicap, fifth and *. a 5 feature race of the half holiday card at i Beulah Park this afternoon. After racing within striking distance of the leaders during the early stages, jockey P. Cogan sent the Siller mare to the front while on the last turn and, after a mild stretch struggle, re- . 3 tained a neck margin over Bruneth. The , 3 Jordan color-hearer finished fast from the rear in the last half mile and was wearing the winner down. Uncertain saved third place after having been much used in racing Deputy into submission in the early stages, j 2 Parole II., the favorite, showed a dull effort i and was never a serious factor. 4 Overhead conditions were more inviting to- 4 , day and the largest crowd of the meeting , witnessed the sport, which was staged over a , good track for the first time since the open- , ing here. With the improvement of condi- 4 . tions also came an improvement in the rac- , ing, which was interesting and replete with . keen and exciting stretch struggles. Although he led the way all the last half, . Al Hotfoot had only a slight margin over the fast-finishing Liberty National at the end of , the fourth race. , , Castlereagh came from far behind to beat , the others home. , Clear Star, Juanita Green and "Watson en- , tered the stretch closely bunched in the third, but Watson had the most in reserve for the final drive and drew clear near the end. It was only after a thrilling finish that Josie Hartman, after disposing of Guy Clay- , ton, succeeded in stalling off the fast-finishing Dolly Virginia in the initial race. At no stage of the second race was Easter Laddie in serious trouble and Clydella proved to be as easily best of the remainder. Mad- denstown raced into third position after Spats retired from the struggle. After being outrun in the early stages, Becky Sue moved up fast on the outside of the leaders and drew away to a handy vic-1 tory in the stretch in the sixth race. Her victory was unexpected and she returned a large dividend. Grapestone, shuffled back early, finished with a belated rush to outstay Silver Tips and May Bruen for second place. Eugene Burry, who is here for this meet-I ing, has been engaged to serve again as one of the officials at Ottawa and Fort Erie, Ont., meetings. James J. Bronnenberg claimed Grapestone for ,000 from Eugene Lutz out of the sixth race. ▲ .
