I 1 i t j r i f s ] £ t c t £ f j ] ] s , ] j j j , . . , , - j ■ j RACELANDS STAKE RACEJ « Increased to Four With the Addition of New Handicap. ♦- Independence and Ashland Handicaps, Race* land Derby and Irontonla Stakes to Be Itun During: Meeting. * ASHLAND, Ky., May 7. — During the sixteen days of racing at Raceland, beginning: July 4 and ending July 21, four stake races will be decided, according to announcement made today by J. O. Keene. manager of the beautiful Greenup County plant. The first of these will be the Independence Handicap, ,000 added, for three-year-olds and over, at seven-eighths, to be run on the opening day. Next will be the Ashland Handicap, ,000 added, for three-year-olds and over, at one mile and a sixteenth, to be decided Saturday, July 7. The Raceland Derby, ,500 added, for three-year-olds, at one mile and a quarter, will be the feature for the second Saturday of the meeting, July 14, and on the last Saturday of the meeting, July 21, the Iron-tonia Stakes, ,000 added, for two-year-olds, at five and one-half furlongs, will be decided. Thus, there is to be one more stake race than was given last year, though the meeting is not as long. Manager Keene announced that William Dondas and Brownell Berryman will divide the work in the racing secretarys office. E ondas will conclude his duties as racing secretary at Arlington Park on June 30 and will go immediately to Raceland and take charge of the office there. Berryman will conclude his duties at Fairmount Park perhaps in time to get to Raceland for the opening day. Dondas will write the first book for the meeting and the second will be written by Berryman. Dondas will be in charge of the pari-mutuels, a position he has filled since the track opened in 1924, and Brownell Berryman again will be in the stewards stand. His associates will be Messrs. Joseph Graddy, who served there the last two meetings, and Charles B. Bennett, of Greenup, and Wallace Williamson, of Ashland, who also have been in the stand the past two years. The stakes will be closed at midnight, Monday, June 3. Superintendent James M. Forsythe has a force of men busy getting the track and grounds in shape for the meeting. « ■
