END OF JAMAICA MEETING * ♦ Close Finish Results in the Garden City Claiming Stakes. ♦ Undercover First. With Arlington Pair In Second and Third Places — Sandy Triumnlis in Opener. NEW YORK. X. Y.. May 16.— The Garden City Claiming Stakes, the outstanding feature I of the final lay of the spring meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Cluh. at Jamaica, re- suited in a victory for Undercover, which races for Mrs. William Knapp. Undercover accounted for his third consecutive victory and added ,275 to the coffers of his fair owner. Edward Arlington, who started Clearance and Scat in the race, took second and third moneys when his entry finished in the order named, and Clarence Buxton was fourth with Paragraph. The finish was of the stirring variety and it was only in the final strides that McAtee landed his mount before Clearance. The race was a costly one for the winning owner for he was claimed by A. S. Woodliffe for his entered price of ,000. The field was a fractious one at the post, but, when the barrier was released, they left in good alignment. M. Garner, astride Clearance, took full advantage of the early speed of his mount •and drew away into a safe iead. Undercover and Murzim raced along under steady restraint, while the others were closely bunched, with the exception of the last two. My Son and Shannon Shore. Clearance continued to show the way to the stretch turn, but McAtee called upon his mount and In lercover responded in a gallant manner. Through the stretch Undercover was steadily wearing down the leader, but it was not until the final few strides that Undercover displayed his superiority. Scat, which had steadily improved his position, finished resolutely on the outside, to be a good third. SPRING WLVTHER. The first meeting on the metropolitan circuit came to a close with the running of the program at Jamaica today. Spring weather prevailed and the crowd was larger than osual. Sandy, from the Rolling Plains Stable, proved an easy winner of the opening race of the day. Ridden by McAtee, he dominated the running throughout and, at the end, showed the way to T. M. Cassidys Mi Vida, while Mrs. J. W. Deans Poly was third. The start was delayed for some time, but the field was dispatched in good alignment. Mi Vida, breaking from the inside, was the first to show in front, but was quickly outrun by Sandy. McAtee allowed his mount to draw into a safe lead and at no stage thereafter was the situation ever in serious doubt. Poly moved up fast entering the stretch, but at the end gave way to Mi Vida, which came with a rush at the end. Irish Holiday accounted for another purse for the Creentree Stable when he led home a band of two-year-olds, at five-eighths. Brother Bebe. racing for Miss Peggy B. Bailey, was the one to finish second, while Mrs. J. Sciaccalugas Rosa Sweep was third. Irish Holiday was ridden by McGovern and, from a good start, drew away into a long lead, but at the end was tiring. 1 owever, he had a length advantage over Brother Bebe. The latter finished gamely under weak riding and closed a good gap to be second. Rose Sweep was well up all the way, but tired at the end. SURPRISE IN HANDICAP. Stretcher, racing for William Moore and ridden by R. Leonard, was confirmed the winner of the Wiiloughby Handicap, following a claim of foul which was lodged by McAtee. who rode George D. Widencrs Finite, and which finished second to him. P. H. Smiths St. Ilenell was third. The alleged foul happened at the eighth post, where Stretcher appeared to cross over on Finite, when the latter was on the rail and on even i terms with Stretcher. Finite was under pressure at the time and appeared beaten, for McAtee was plying his whip stoutly in an effort to hold his advantage. Following a lengthy discourse by the stewards, the original finish was allowed to stand. Four starters faced the barrier in the Wiiloughby Handicap, with Finite the popular choice. McAtee got him away first and he showed the way to the stretch turn, with Stretcher racing in close pursuit and St. Henell and 1 Bye and Bye struggling along further back. Garner appeared none too anxious to call 1 upon his mount and, turning for home, went wide at the eighth post with the leaders closely lapped. Stretcher drew away under pressure and appeared "to have Finite thoroughly beaten when he bore over towards ; the inside and impeded Finite slightly. McAtee . immediately took up and then came to the outside. St. Henell was a good third. A large band of maiden three-year-olds 1 paraded for the fifth race, and the winner turned up in John Cavanagh, racing for A. J. Goldsborough and ridden by L. McAtee, and i completing a triple for him. Helenita was the one to race to second place, while Mint Dinah was third. The winner followed the early pace closely, moved up fast on the outside entering the stretch and drew away at the end. Helenita saved much ground turning for home and was an easy second over Mint Dinah. M. I... Allens Shasta Flapper, ridden by C. Kurtsinger, accounted for the final race of the meeting in an easy fashion from Man-well, while Padraig was third. The winner raced close to the leaders throughout, moved into the lead when ready and won with speed in reserve. Manwell outstayed Padraig in the final drive. J. W. He.ily arrived from Pimlico with eighteen horses and took up stable room at Belmont Park. A notice on the board in the secretarys office stated that post positions would be drawn every day before the races at Belmont Park.
