OUTSIDERS TRIUMPH • ■ Arlington Park Races Result in Numerous Form Upsets. « . Bellas Carries Bedwell Colors to Fore in Claiming Handicap — Second Ladies Day. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS. III., June 15.— Racing to his best form under a good ride and a fast beginning, enabled H. G. Bed-wells Vellas to be an easy victor in the three-quarters mile claiming handicap that served as the best offering of Arlington Parks program today, witnessed by c. big crowd that included many feminine guests of the management, the occasion being the second Ladies Day of the meeting. Canaan. an outsider, finished closely in the wake of the winner and a considerable margin before Florida Gold. The winner was in command shortly after the start and he withstood the challenge of Canaan, shaking the latter off with ease when beginning the stretch run and being well in hand towards the end. Arno, the favorite, and Tyrol never figured to any serious extent after the first eighth. Arno simply tired, finding the 115-pound impost and the fast pace a bit too much. Tyrol, however, would have been a murh more serious factor had Philpot ridden him less listlessly. He took him coupletely out of it after the start seemingly not relishing the post position he occupied, and he kept him in last place until the stretch was reached. .where, under urging, Tyrol came fast and closed a big gap. More energy on the part .of the rider in the early stages would have given him a contending position, and caused him to be a menace to the winner in the final stages. £ BLA KWOOD VICTOR. I While the claiming handicap held the main Interest, the race preceding was not far behind in attractiveness for the crowd. To the speculators it served as a better medium, and as a contest it also overshadowed the handicap. Blackwood was victor in it over Mino, the pair fighting it out in the last sixteenth in strenuous fashion with Blackwood • up in the final strides to get the veridct. Blackwood was in receipt of considerable weight concession from Mino and the lightweight was a contributing factor in the Bloomfield Stable representatives success, also for his sudden form improvement. The afternoons racing brought continuous surprises and the downfall of favorites. Some of the winners showed decided form improvement over preceding starts. Pride and Our Buddy were a pair of successful ones during the afternoon, though they had been beaten badly in their preceding racing. Both were held at long prices. Nora D., making her initial start over the track, was successful in the first race. She beat home the outsider. Lady Lanta, with the favorite, Exquisite, in third place. The start aided Nora D.. which began fast and showed fine speed. She promptly moved into a good lead. She tired fast in the last eighth, but under hustling tactics, held Lady Lanta safe. The latter, coming with a rush right at the end. managed to pass Exquisite in the final strides. OUR BUDDY SURPRISES. The second race brought an upset, when the suddenly improved Our Buddy beat fourteen other starters to the finish in hollow fashion. Little Guinea, another outsider, landed in second place with Ethel Sherlock, grouped with others in the field, finishing in advance of the others. Ferseth was the favored one here with Honeyfish also coming in for some support. The latter showed an early flash of speed, but Ferseth had little opportunity to race to her best form on account of the interference she suffered. Pride, which in a preceeding stait was beaten off. suddenly recovered her speed and defeated Jennifer after a hard stretch drive on the inner course, where this mile and one-sixteenth race was run. Resourceful finished In third place, beating home Miss Chiniquy. The latter was victress in a preceding start, but she ran rather poorly in this instance. Her rider, M. Meyer, was partly to blame for it. He almost fell off at the start and rode her poorly all during the race. Pride came from far back to gain her victory. Jennifer was made favorite in the race despite his poor race on a preceding start, when he was beaten off. The Blue Ribboa stable, comprising eight head, was shipped to Windsor, Ont., late today.
